Hi everybody,

This is my first post on cgtalk, I always almost cry when i see the Cg choice galleries.

Well this is the beginning of my first matte, my problem is that I can't find the good light to make a uniform picture. I know just a bit of natural light rules, but anyway i don't manage to make it work.

As it is a WIP i don't ask help for the constrcution on my elements, only for the light (how background elements would be desaturated and lighted more).

It would be great to have one or two advices from you expert guys.
Thanks by advance =) Later!

Hi Soadade
and welcome to CgTalk matte painting :)
I'm no expert guy but I think it's a good start. True, you have some depth issues here. Light is not a problem. Try to stick to few rules:
Closer objects are darker
Futher objects have less texture
Try to play with contrast to define different depths

In general I think your mountain is a bit too light. Edges of the mountains are too blurry and the vally could use some haze/fog...

I hope it helps,
Keep up the good work

One more thing. I don't want to get too picky but I think in real mattes, they usually want to remove the blank white sky (for the movies) to give it more beautiful, epic feel. I have seen matte pictures with white sky as well, so I'm a bit confused there, just an idea - you decide.

Hi SpetsK =)

Thanks to answer, i'll try to apply your advices correctly on the next post. And for the white sky, that ain't a sky this is just my blank photoshop background :) Because that's an exercice fo my school, I must do a video matte painting, so i will add sky later in combustion.

Thanks again for thoses constructives comments!

Later :)

HI Bruno and welcome , I agree with the commetn above, although I think your aereal perspective works fine for the foreground objects, I see a problem with perspective on foreground architecture though, the concept and idea is great, but yes your sky need big improvement , detail , clouds and colors, sometimes matte painting is not 100% accurate to reality, and you can mimic reality with nice colors and impressive landscapes, than in real life can not exist, always taking in count the rules for perspective and depth, I would try a wide screen composition too, this is too square, I think you have too sharp edges in you r differente depth elements such as mountains, improve this and show us your result

Hi James, and thanks for your helpul commentaries !

I tried to rework my composition with a really quick rough.
Indeed, that's really better whis a 16/9 format like, and with a better perspective for the big architecture.
I added a sky (I know that my clouds are ugly sorry for that), a water fall in the right part and a forest in the foreground.
I put thoses elements to "wall in" (surround?) the big temple in middleground and to attract the eye on it.

I hope that my rough is a litlle comprehensible !

Thanks again, that's help me a lot, and sorry for my english :)
