View Full Version : Analog tv tuning effect.
Big Piece of Chunk 12-06-2007, 01:53 PM Hello Im trying to create a analog tv effect when you are tuning the chanel trying to get a sharp picture..
When it gets distorted the picture kind of bends and jumps.
the thing is I dont know how it realy looks like since there is no analog in my country.
please need help..

Split the image into separate color components using Shift Channels, then animate each of them separately. Use the Add blendmode to combine them. Analog tuning is not that random at all but has a regular horizontal wave pattern. If you slightly vary it for each channel, you get some intersting effects. The jumpiness is only the signal tracking offseting the buffer. Mostly it's a horizontal black bar followed by aghosted version of the image. It gets slightly diagonal due to the delay in the cathode ray as it travels from left to right. There's also intermittent static, but it's usually not that noticable. Basically you either see the static or the distorted picture, but not both at the same time. Analogue reception is superior to digital in that respect (kinda "automatic" filtering if you will due to the underlying physics). Other than that you should always figure in some distortion even on the perefectly "tuned in" image. Old analog TVs and antennas strongly respond to any magnetic interference. I'm sure you'll come up with something creative.

Tnx for the replay.
Could u explain more how to split the image into separate color components using Shift Channels.
What Im trying to create is more of an really old B&W tv where I will use the distortion kind as an transition betwean 2 shots Its a music video and the more interference the better.(I would like to create the feeling as in Tarantinos deathprof but use the feeling of an 60th television instead of ald 70 film.(so 70 film shown in the tube)
The example where the black bar comes in and a ghostly picture follows diagonal seems like the effect Im after. (its to bad I cant really visualise it, would be much easier to create. Is the ghosted image ditorted ? or how do they travel diogonal, do they overlap or does the tile repeat)
Same with that magnetic interference how does the picture get distorted in that case.
And what happens with the jumpines

You set all channels you don't need to Full Off.

All artifacts are merely dependendent on the frequency of your electrical system which would be 50 Hz for most parts of Europe. Any vertical "travellling" would never be any faster than that.
Basically you start out with completely garbeld transmission (static), then as you tune in the bar and ghost image become visible and zap thru the screen at full frequency. Images will seem to overlap. The better the tuning becomes, the slower it will get. It will look like the image gets stuck at half the screen and then in the final step it will "snap" to its final position.
The diagonality of the black bar is also defined by how stable the tuning is. With faster moving pumping it will be steeper, the more perfect the picture gets, it will almost be straight.
The interference could come from multiple source: On the TV set it could be influenced e.g. by the telly's internal speakers, cables in the wall or a powerline near the building. These distortion are more or less a bulging and sometimes a slight flicker again based on the frequency of the electrical system. "Remote" interference from thunderstorms or bad wheather would simply degrade the reception quality. when a lightning occurs, the image will simply go away for a few seconds with all the distortions described above.

Tnx again for your expertise.
I think I get the shift chanels.
I combine the RGB chanels with different opacity making them blend.
To problem is its going to be black&white.
Any way I thik I get an idea how to distort the fottage ..
tnx for the help.
