I'll be using 3ds max and zbrush. Creating from the bottom up, first my blocked out model, the topology in max and then using zbrush to create all the details.

Here I post the first 'pass' on research gathering.

Thanks, Always wanted to model her too. Hope it lives up to our expectations.

Great, Good to have your faith in this :D

Let's kick it off. I begin with modeling the star base. Blocking out the whole shebang, and detailing it inwards. Hopefully trying the block of clay/clay tools in zbrush to 'sculpt' out the form, as I tried succesfully recently in sculpting a 'sculpted', pair of feet.

For anyone interested in details, I'm basicaly regular polymodeling in 3ds max 2008, cuting, welding and other things. :)
Hard to find a good top down view, anyone have one ?. It's also hard to get refs of the base and the surfaces/benches etc. People always take pics of the damn statue :P

Blocked out the whole statue, and set up comparison views to the best image refs I have.
Now the fun begins :D

Hehe, love the use of Google Earth. This was one of those monumental things I first looked for like empire state building etc.

You are in luck mate. A little Google searching turned up this families photo album of their trip to the Lady. Really good close up stuff and refs from the museum.

Photos (http://picasaweb.google.com/arunvelusamy/StatueOfLibertyWallStreetBowlingGreenWTC/photo#5080562067113702514) - Good ones start about 10 pics in.

Thanks for the wonderful support so far guys.

Cheers Puzzle3d and killay :)

CoryCosper Let's hope so eh!, can't under-deliver now!

WyattHarris Thanks for the link!, Great set of photos for reference for this project. Your right google earth is fantastic, could play with it all day :). And it really was the only help here in finding a top view!

gamePat Damn Pat!, I'm really looking forward to sculpting too!

So here's the update.
It's minimal mind you, on account of having been really sick latetly, ( the last 2 weeks were pretty rough, so no energy to do this, but on the recovery now ).

I roughed more stuff in, and began the pedestals bricks. I experimented with modeleling the bricks and the indents ( obviousely cemented together I know ), And using a displacement map. I haven't worked out exactly what I will use yet.
Possibly just model it all, but use f-edge pluging to smooth everything on render.
Currently I modeled everything and set it all up with chamfers ready for a turbosmooth. So when I take it into mud/zbrush I can then smooth happily and add the bumps etc.. But possibly that's not even needed for the pedestal, as it's condition is pretty good.

Here's the images.. Small displace modifer added to simulate some weathing.

Oh, I also worked adding in the base the entranceways and hollows.

Hi guys,
I'm moving to England very soon, and it's been a crazy few weeks getting ready to move. Unfortunately that meant I couldn't finish this challenge. Good luck to everyone!
