View Full Version : Car modelling with splines

Hello peoples...

Im interested in modelling my first complete car, and i have tried using box modelling but the mesh seems horrible. I heard somewhere that using splines creates nicer and more effective curves of cars without too much trouble. I found this awsome tutorial http://www.raz.ro/tutorials/masina/car1.htm and tried to mimic the spline structure but could not get it to work (because they use patches i guess). Is there any clear tutorial for cinema 4d to create cars with splines? or the basic body shape etc.

Thanks in advance :)

I would just mess around with lofts all you can but Cinema is not known for its spline modeling ablitys. and if your mesh is bad it means you should probibly start over again and plan it more.

This is my attempt at polymodelling a car so far (WIP). You can see sections are bumpy and retarded, also i have been told that the model looks "liquidy". Well ill keep working on it and ill try and fix up the mesh. Thanks for your response JIII, i guess ill have to actually get skilled with the poly modelling ;)

halogen...that cars fine...surely the bumpy parts are caused by the spline being bumpy surely?

dunno...not sure about spline modelling tuts...but there are some tuts in the tutorials and tips bit at the top of the cinema forum.

Thanks flingster! I was looking for that thread about cars. Ill take a look at those tutorials, didnt catch them when i was browsing through the tutorials section.

Thanks for the confidence boost, i might try and neaten up the mesh alot later when i have some free time, i would love to see that car complete...

Heh i couldnt find any blueprints for a bugatti atlantic when i looked last, nor for my other idea of a 1970 corvette stingray. Does anyone have any blueprints for the corvette especially?

Thanks for your help flingster, you rock :buttrock:

Your car has that "fluid" look because the hypernurbs cage needs either edge/point/face weighting or more detail (edges), but there's nothing wrong with it as such, it looks good.

I tried box modelling mine in one cage and found it pretty hard to get right, I went for box-modelling it in sections in the end. It's here (http://www.knight42.fsnet.co.uk/c4d/cordoba/cordoba.htm) if you want to look at it.

I've found that modeling a car looks better if you model it in pieces just like a real car is built.

i think you must be registred but there ist a stingray click (http://smcars.nd4spdworld.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=956) (1968 i think but it looks beauty too)

True.

If it doesn't fit, force it. If if breaks, you didn't need it any way.

Even more true :)

the way to make your sections fit together best is to completly finish one section. and then just split the edges off and use those to model another part. that way you dont have to worry about matching parts.

I'd like to quote my favorite professor if you will allow it.

Professor: "dandavis, how do you eat an elephant?"

dandavis: "I don't know, how DO you eat an elephant?"

Professor: "One bite at a time"

I've lived by those words since I heard them about 15 years ago. He was a smart guy, that Professor.

Yet I digress, yep, if you havn't guessed by now, I agree with miketche.

Hi Halogen,

I may be a few months late...I don't usually model with splines though version 1 of the Mach 5 from a couple of years back I guess was. If you're intersted in box modelling, I can post the template I start out with to model all of my automobiles. Anyone interested? HTH a little.

O.K. ragazzi,

Voila... Now it may not look like much, but it's a time saver when starting a new automobile.
This is the template I've used to start the Fiat 500, the Ferrari IMSA, the Peugeout 206cc, version II of the Mach 5 and also automobiles not on display in my gallery, which include the Dodge Viper, the Ford T-Bird, and currently in the works, an older model Ferrari.

8K file downloadable in zip and sit files.

Thanks! Dead useful.

Your profile says you're from a Parallel Universe - lucky for us the cars there are the same shape as ours... :D

Hi everyone,

flingster: Glad to have shared. :)

knight42: I would have thought they may have looked different too, and looking through the
worm portal I see the only difference is the engines here run on beer.

Peoples: Sure, will do.

Halogen: She's coming along sweetly! :)

ThirdEye: Fischia ragazzi! E le donne dove sono? ;)
