Ok,

First thing first: I recently started my first project (a robot) but on the main forum(not from this site) where I posted my WIP no one actually helped me. Believe me it's kinda depressing not being helped on your first project. I'm still learning though.

I hope you guys dont mind having a starter in this modelling challenge. But when I read about the challenge I thought, why not? I have enough time, I hope people will be helping, and I have a topic to start with.

So, yesterday I started modelling but cause of my internet went down I havent had the time posting my wips online. But I'll upload them this evening.

Like the thread says, I'll be modelling a fantasy statue ( I hope the rules wont change about the fact that we may model a fantasy statue).
It will have the shape of a chained bear about 30m tall.

The enviroment will be some sort of landing spot for fantasy zeplins (i hope its spelled right).

I'll try to post some sketches of mine, but I'll need to find a scanner for this :p

Greetz,
Peter

Ok I hope it's a good start. So I actually started with a cilinder, made it poly editable and resized-extrude-beveled everything.

Oh btw the head is pointing upwards! in case you didn't see :)
If you have any comments on this please do say. I still need to learn/practice.

If you have any suggestions on what I need to model next...
I have alot of reference images of bears, from bottom to top. :p

Ok ,

So I didnt find any scanner I could use. So I drew a sketch in Paint :p
It will be something like the pic below. The end result might differ offcourse.

I hope you like it :)

Killay, I think posting here is a great idea whether you are a beginner or not. This forum is great for constructive critisism. First thing I would do though is clear your project with Roberto. I believe the rules say fantasy is okay but it needs to be from established canon (like the Argonath).

Now you may not get alot of comments at first because there isn't much to comment on yet. You have the beginnings of your bear and its a good start. Keep posting and as you progress people will help more and more. Maybe post a wireframe image because the polys in the arms may need a little tweaking but I can't tell in shaded mode.

Good Luck!

Well let's hope this project is authorised. I cross my fingers :p

K but in the mean time I couldnt wait so I started modelling the head, It really starts to look good . I also started to look after reference pics about the feet of the bears. But I couldn't really find one. So that will be kind of difficult, but hey without any difficulty there wouldn't be any competition would it?

i'll upload my wip when I have the bear done (not detailed, just body, feet , head, hands)

Greetings to all,
Peter

Ok so I worked on some more, not yet detailed, but the overall.

I just need to know how I'll make the fingers and other detailes? Cause it needs to be a statue I dont think that the fingers are all seperated, but rather weld togheter. But I'll figure out that later.

I still need to work on his head right now. But i had some difficulties with his bottom :p
But it kinda worked out, so.....

Have fun ,
Peter

Ok just to be sure does this head looks like a bear?
Cause this head is really killing me. I still not sure if I'm happy with this head or not....

I've been drawing like hell on this (sketches from all views) , I just dont know......

I know the ears makes a lot of difference, but I dont thinbk the ears are quite right.

Oke,

I've made my mind! I've thought about some stories that would go with the statue, but none of them is aproppiate with the bear alone. So I'm adding an extra to it. You' ll hear the story at the final render :p

But I'll add a guy with a spear which penetrates the heart of the bear. Here is the guy I'm working on. I just need to connect the legs, and stuff... :)

Djeezeus it will take ages for me, hehe....

Every shot I'm seeing on the web the ears are facing straight ahead. I guess bears can't turn their ears like other animals because they were ALL facing straight ahead. I would narrow the snout more. Yours tapers out like a cone wereas a grizzlies is almost straight out, closer to a cylinder.

Good remark, thanks for that ! Well I'll change it as soon as I can :)
But now that I think of... For the fur of the bear, should I make somthing similar to the picture below? or just flat? And if I have to make it look like fur, does anyone knows how?

Btw, for the human: progress below :p
I just aint happy with the bottom of the human... I 've done my best to connect the legs with the body, but ... as you can see it's not perfect. I also have some diffciulties with the armpits.
But that are worries for later

Hey Killay,

While your working on the crit's to the bear. I have a couple of ideas for you.
The bears fur would look nice 'slashed', like with a chisel all over it.

or , you could follow this tutorial on zbrush ( if you don't know zbrush yet, follow a couple of beginner tuts. It's pretty easy to get going with it )

http://www.zbrush.info/docs/index.php/Tutorial:_Bird_of_Prey#Feathers

Good luck :)

The human; Post the topology so I can help you more with crit or a paintover.
