Title: The Holly King
Name: Chris Cole
Country: Canada
Software: Photoshop

The Holly King is a character from Celtic mythology. On the two yearly soltices he battles for supremacy with his alter-ego, the Oak King. The Holly King wins the battle at the summer soltice and rules until he is defeated at the winter solstice by the Oak King. Since I wanted an image for my Christmas card, I chose to portray him in a less violent mode than I might otherwise have done. Since he is sometimes associated with the god Cernunnos, I gave him the stag antlers of the forest god.

C & C always welcome.

I like this work very much! He looks so gentle as if he is now looking at his beloved children. But the texture of his mantle is a little...rough,maybe. But still it's a very good piece of work!

This is a very beautiful painting I think. I like all the Celtic things you added e.g. the tattoo, the fibula, the sword and so on. Everything fits perfectly.

He has a very gentle quality. I'd rethink my lighting, though. It's quite confusing. There seems to be one type on his face, light from another direction on his torso and arms, yet another from the holly, not to mention the strong potential backlight from the bright snow in the rear.....might need a little clarification.
