Who knows of any good tutorials? I'm planning on building a cave environment and some stone structures, and wanted to aquaint myself with it.

i guess the best tutorial is your own practice and patience,
the best way to do a cave in max is by mesh editing and meshsmooth, I,ve made a cave once, sorry the pic quality is so bad it is a historic one!!! i made it two yeears ago!!

For generally using editable poly, the tutorials available with Gmax are pretty good, and generally it has some things that favour it over editable pmesh, if only that you can use Mesh Tools (available via www.scriptspot.com)with it.. For doing a cave it's probably easiest if you use your modelling in conjunction with the niose modifier. :)

WHAT is the difference between editable mesh and editable poly? I've been using editable mesh for a while and I can't really think of any other way to do it...

Basically you can cut/divide Editable Polys without the extra vertex being created as it is in Editable Mesh. also you have access to the many extra tools provided by the scripts available for Editable Poly. At the moment though, Editable Poly does not have extrudable edges. There are scripts for this, but the ones I've so far used don't have the full functionality that Editable Mesh has for this. Check out www.scriptspot.com to get some idea of the additional tools available via scripts. :)

you mean like pulling open edges with shift? You need the eploy2 plugin.

Yeah I tried that also..I had epoly2....my machine didn't like it unfortunately .. when it would work it exruded the edges fine, and as soon as I took the mouse off, I got an error message and Max promptly disappeared without even waving bye bye properly. The extrude edges script extrudes the edges but in an arbitary fashion. Maybe these are due to me being on Win 98 .. pass... cos others seem to have got them to work ok but I can't swap to Win 2k at the moment so I'll have to wait. :)

Ok so Im not missing much judging from what you're saying...I have never needed to extrude an edge, but i extrude faces/polygons a lot.

It's got to be because of 98...have heard nothing but bad things about Max running on anything besides 2K (don't have XP so I can't comment on that).

By the way, where can I find the epoly2 plug-in? Is it freeware?

I can't imagine box modelling without being able to extrude polys...
