View Full Version : Edit while rendering?

Having a pretty slow computor (G4 450MP) Iīd like to do some work while rendering.
I now have a rendering with about 20h left and like to go on with later scenes.
I render to picture series, so a crash (no one yet!)will only make me have to render from the stop.
I do realize rendering will be slowed down, but some prework would be done for the next scene. So my idea is to work on another Cinema document than the one being rendered and of coarse no testrendering.

Is this considered a sane idea?

Also on the same object. Getting a considerable cheaper new PC configured only for rendering , does Net Rendering offer the possibility to make the PC do the rendering all by itself, having my Mac free for modelling and ultimatelly testrendering as well?
I have only taken a shallow look at NetRendering and are not totally sure how it works. Got it sort of working with my old G3.

hmm its a sane idea if you have the patience to deal with slow as hell interface.

Before you do this, stand in a really cold shower and then use C4D when its rendering. With any luck at all, you should be moving very slowly because of the cold. That way you will not notice the slowness.

Sure, I do it all the time. This is one of the great things about Cinema--it doesn't seem to slow the render much at all.

Absolutely. The PC can be both server and client, or you can make the Mac the server and the PC the only client.

if haven't tried this in OS9, but I do it all the time in OSX (I think you might have memory probs with OS9 - though you can probably do it)

to have the best luck

- get OSX
- gey as much RAM as you can (ram is cheap now)

I even test render in the viewport while final rendering to picture viewer.

as far as you netrender/pc questions. i don't know

hi tcastudios,

well, you can work on other scenes while you're rendering, but it's not really fun. and it always depends on whats in the scene you're working on. i'm on a dual-g4 with 1 gig ram and can't work on most of my scenes while the comp is rendering. so i doubt you will be able to work on a fully rigged character with posemixer for facials while your computer is rendering. what i normally do while my comp is 'at work' i set up the next scenes for rendering (checking the materials, check all hypernurbs, pong-tags, etc. etc)

i haven't worked with the net renderer myself, but as far as i know it's possible to render in a heterogen (correct english?) network with it. but i'm sure there are some other pros in this forum, who will be able to answer that question for you :)

Should work then. Thats good. Have 1.5Gb memory but itīs OS9 (still.)
And...I could do with a shower! : )

So getting a PC, I donīt need to buy a PC-licence? I can install NT as a Mac user and have the pc as Server/Client -and- run Cinema by itself on the Mac?
Seems very good if thats the case!

Multiple rendering at the same time (on the same machine) would be a nice feature. I'm often rendering a scene I have finished (that will take some time) and in the mean time I am working on a new one (not really a problem with my machine :p) and I want to do some rendertests, but I can't cause I have to wait for the other one to finish :scream:.
I don't want to render in the viewport, cause testrenders sometimes are animations or precise resolution is necessary.

If you are looking for a second machine just for rendering: good idea.

You might want to read this topic about picking hardware and check my post while you're at it:

I don't think Mac combined with a pc will cause troubles, although I'm not 100% sure.
If it doesn't work, just copy the file to the second pc for rendering, you don't need NETrender this way. Takes a bit more time though.

NO sir,
OS9 totally SUCKS!!!:thumbsdow
at memory management and Cannot truly mulitask
its a set of system resources that deploys memory in a "winner take all "fashion.
and if the winner ( top process) is challenged by some brash attempt to
open a web browser or something
it will crash the whole system requiring a reboot.

MAC OSX however is a MODERN protected MEMORY unix based operation
system much like the venerable NT and it various decendants.
it will run your Cinema 4DXL render in its own PROTECTED MEMORY space
and assign memory intelligently and dynamicly to other processes as needed.
and if some other app does crash or begin to misbehave it wont kill
your whole system requireing a reboot.

if you are serious about 3D on the MAC
Run OSX:cool:

If NR is a app by itself, wouldnīt it be possible then to use it to render while having Cinema open at the same time doing work -and- check renderings in "its own" pict renderer? All in the same machine?

Also , if someone knows, Iīd like to repeat my question:

Can I, as a Mac user, install my NR on a PC and have it render by itself. I would then be able to proceed work on the Mac. Or do I need a PC licence for this to work?
