View Full Version : Lofting question, help a.s.a.p.
Arxangel 04-18-2003, 04:28 PM Hey I trying to loft in max 5, having great success up til this point. I took a few splines and connect them, well at least it tells me they are connected, but when I select the vertex points they still say 2 vertices selected. What I am trying to do is make a root system for a tree, I had made some splines, and now I want to loft them, but when I had attached the splines together it no longer recognizes the spline as a spline. Will I have to do it separately and boolean them together from separate pieces?
Thanks

Sounds like you just need to weld the 2 vertices:shrug:

Might I give the suggestion that Lofting is not the easiest way to make a tree root system (or anything for that matter)... For an complex object like that I would use subdivision modelling. The mapping is harder, but the modelling will be much easier...

Come to think of it if you're using max 5 you could collapse down to an epoly and use the extrude along a spline to extend out your roots;)

Hi Arxangel,
I don’t know if I really understand the problem, but remember the first restriction by lofting-all the shapes on the path must contain the same number of splines. Or the shapes on your path have to be made of series of unconnected splines that look like connected(round in this particular case). Marcel is right, it is not easy, but I think it will work as well.

P.S. Remember the example with the fork from the Max manuals if I'm not clear.

EPoly has this neat thing called Follow Spline or Extrude Along Spline or something. So, do the main trunk, select a face, then do that thing that I can't remember what it's called. Worth a shot, and you can still use all that wonderful Spline work you did.

Totally behind Stroker, extrude the main root, then use the extrude along spline tool .It would give you total control of what U're doing without making your polycount explode .

Thanks for all the great suggestions...I guess the main reason for using loft was it give you mapping coordinates. When I have some time tonight at home after work I will try it at home.
