Title: Cattle II
Name: Neil Blevins
Country: USA
Software: Photoshop

Sequel to my original Cattle image, this one is a little more like what I was originally intending for the image. I did my best to give it a sense of perspective and depth, while still feeling very flat.

The color hierarchy gives it the wanted depth; while each layer is monochrome.
Nice colors too.
Great work as usual.

Very nice, the beast has immediate presence thanks to the aggressive stance. It has that kind of primitive, cave wall purity yet wickedly surreal! I love it!

Did the presence of the sun in the scene decide the colors chosen for the subject? I'm always curious as to color choices.

Again - really interesting and well done!

Thanks everyone for your comments, I'm glad you like it.

Did the presence of the sun in the scene decide the colors chosen for the subject? I'm always curious as to color choices.

The choice of the atmosphere dictated the color of the character. I was playing with the idea of a REALLY bright set of suns illuminating a gas planet. The gasy atmosphere of the planet gets lit by the sunlight, so as you get closer to the ground, less light gets in, and so it appears more orangy. As you get further up, it gets more yellow and eventually pure white. The character is silouetted, so I made him orange, since he's only getting bounce light.

Also, while common practice to make something look hot by showing contrast (ie, placing the bright sun against a dark background), I decided to try the opposite for fun and make the background near the sun really bright, so bright that the suns are almost just hinted at. It gives them this weird shimmering quality that I sorta like.

we dont normally see 2d work from you so this is very cool..

I've been doing a lot more 2d work recently (check my portfolio for examples), obviously they're not as advanced as my 3d work, but they're fun to do, and it's nice to just sit down and paint something in a few hours for a change instead of the 20-30 hour 3d compositions :)
