So I'm working on an extremely intricate painting. I have always been a fan of very detailed work, and I have seen many people who are able to pull it off. But I worry that I may not be able to strike an accurate balance between color and detail.
I really want to make sure that, with this particular image, I don't go overboard, but in general--what are some theories about composition and detail/vrs negative space?
Here is the image in question:

It is so far called Sundiata's Daughter, but that is a working title. I am hoping to finish it in time to send it to my University's art and literary magazine.
Any insight?
