This is my demo reel, fresh outta school. The focus of the reel was my first attempt at making an animated short, and I was pretty happy with the way it turned out. Although I like working at all stages of development, the emphasis of the short was on good-ol' animation, because that's what I wanna do for a living. My reel, as well as my other work can be downloaded directly from my website www.johnmacfarlane.net (http://www.johnmacfarlane.net) . Comments and critiques are welcome. Don't be shy!

As far as the short goes, nice job conveying the relationship, emotions and physical interaction between the robot and the magnet, especially the part where he rips the magnet from his arm. My biggest critique would be the music track. I didn't think it really fit with the short. A subtler track would've have fit the scenario better. The track did seem to work with the rest of the reel, and although I know this wasn't the focus of the reel, personally I would've liked to have seen more of your 2D comic art:thumbsup:

Nice little story in there will good character representation and animation. I'm not sure exactly what goes into a showreel but from the ones I've seen there tends to be a bit more variety in the clips though. However nice work, I enjoyed it :)

I agree the music isn't a perfect fit to the reel. In future iterations of the reel I plan on selecting a jazz-style piece. Glad you like my comic art. PPL say they have a hard time determining my drawing style (it's certainly NOT manga, and not DC/marvel), so I guess that means my style is unique! Yay!

I think I know what you mean when you see reels jump between things. Usually it's models or quickie animations and you see a little of one, then another, then back to the first. It's actually a trick to make you think they have more work than they really do. I couldn't break up my short, since it would destroy the continuity of my story. As far as the variety goes, I felt that my other works (mostly animation tutorials) weren't up to the same standard, especially because I was still learning the tools, plus I wanted my reel to be under 2 minutes. With the animated short outta the way, the 2D art display is to show I know a little about making art with my hands.

Okay, only got a couple responses. Am I to assume my work is flawless and no one can think of a single flaw in it to critique? On the other hand, was there nothing about it worth praising?

I really like watching others Demo Reels just to get a feel of what I'll do one day.....
I like yours a lot. Although I agree the music doesnt at all go with it and is in pretty bad quality [streaming have anything to do with that???] but thats why you posted up here first...... to have us tell you what you need to change instead of having some big exec tell you that you suck........

I had to compress the hell out of the audio to get my filesize down to something managable. Without compression the size was 40-50 mb so it makes a huge difference. Of course, I think there has to be some kind of music bed otherwise you can't hold peoples' attention. I'll have to audition other music for the demo reel of course.
