Yo.

I'm trying to throw some models together for a game. I'm aiming for graphics with similar detail to Final Fantasy 9 and/or Threads of Fate. If you look at screenshots, you'll see that the graphics aren't awesome, but they have a base level of detail which gets the point across well enough. I happen to think that this style has character.

Anyway! I've so far created what I believe to be a pretty decent mage, considering my requirements. The problem is that... I can't make the textures. I've got Photoshop & I've read tutorials on "painting" cloth, etc., but I'm getting nowhere. A screenshot of the mage and really bad texture attempt/s:

Cutting out rambling and quickly getting to the point... I'd like to learn techniques I can use to achieve FF9/ToF-style textures, without having to take a 3 year course in graphics. Could someone point me in the right direction? (Note that I have used Google and found nothing relevant or of my level.)

Thanks in advance.

Thanks for all the replies.

*cough*

Anyway... resisting the urge to give up, I've been practicing. I've been reading mainly manga tutorials (reason below) and have studied folds in more depth, etc. Mage attempt #2:

It's a lot better, imho.

Since my last post, I stumbled across screenshots of another game called Tales of the Abyss. It's a PS2 game, but it uses simple yet effective graphics. Example:

This is definitely the style I wanna use - or at least something similar. I've identified it as glorified manga (hence the manga tutorials), but I could be wrong. I'd still like someone to help me find the right path.

Many thanks.
