View Full Version : DOF problem in 3dsmax 5.0
Hi, i have a problem with depth of field in 3dsmax 5.0.
I get a black line surrounding my object when i use it.. i have tried with both "use camera" and "pick node" and both ... feels like there is no more ways to try :)
If i have a character and a background, there becomes a black line on the edge of the characters shape and then the blurred background. i want the character to blurr out also when it gets to about the ears.
Hope you understand my problem, any help appriciated.
thanks

Yeah it's a common problem with the fake-DoF effect. I suggest you stop using it, it'll never turn out good.
Instead check out the much more realistic camera DoF effect. Check out the settings of the camera, you can enable DoF in there. Your rendertimes will spike through the roof though, but the effect is, as far as I know anyway, pretty darn accurate.
As far as I know it's either doing that, or faking it by compositing background and foreground elements together in a post-processing program. Or some 3rd party plugin, but I don't know anything about them. Again, the camera-DoF in MAX is pretty cool imo. Just gotta take pain of increased rendertimes like man :)

Using the camera DOF will indeed multiple your rendertimes by the amount of samples use. Good smooth DOF takes lots of samples, maybe 8 or 12, or even more.
There are also plugins that fake DOF using the Z-buffer. I have heard that they give really good results when you render you scene with 4 or 5 samples camera DOF, and use the plugin to smoothen out the image afterwards.
a solution that works for me with exelent results and really pretty render times are the rpf and rla output files. if you have after effects or combustion you can render your animation as rpf or rla image sequence. this images retain the 3d info and you can open them in Æ or combustion as image sequence. you can render rla and rpf with z depth info and apply it as effect in post production, so rendertimes are pretty fast without having to atually render DOF. BUT!! rpf and rla work with an embedded z depth cnannel, so youll get the same alpha black line so try to make your background with a solid object so you dont have alpha.
allright, thanks for the help you guys. i will try the camera-DOF and see if i like the result more :)
thanks alot
i just use the lenz effects focus in the video post
works fine for me with a very small increase in render time

Can you explain how to add a DOF in video post?
I would be very thankful.
