grassynoel 04-18-2003, 01:13 PM Here is a matte painitng I have ben building in my spare time. I used Vray in Max5 and some photoshop to build it.

That's brilliant! It looks very realistic.
How long has that taken you? I can't even imagine how to build something like this.
Could you show us some of your textures? Because I'm trying to do something similiar myself, and it's not going very well.
PS. What kind of references did you use? Or is it all from your head?

Is this really all cg? Hard to tell, it looks very real, I too can't imagine how I would do something like this. Would be interesting to see what was Photoshopped!

Hey grassynoel, nice work but the colors are too strong to be real IMO.
I tried setting down satturation for each color in PS and it looks better to me. Especially the red and blue look to comic-like.
Try it on your own.

I have a greyscale version of the scene on my website..
http://www.3dluvr.com/glenn/3d/matte_painting/index.htm
It's all 3d except for the trees and the far bg.
I also prefer it a little more desaturared and even like it with a bit of sepia thrown in. I figured I'd leave it pretty much ungraded in readiness for a live plate of people walking about. Then I'd grade them together.
As for the maps, they're just a few digital shots I took around the city here.
Thanks for the crits.

I've uploaded an 8mb zip file of textures that I used (excluding all the tiny car maps etc.
You can find it here:

I like the detail and especially the lighting! Lighting is always key.
I only have one small crit. If you look at the silos in the background they look a little to flat. I understand the perspective and depth but something is sticking out at me. Look at the quad building near center and then compare it to its background. There might be just a little too much haze on the back gound thats washing it out a tad to much in comparison to the clarity of the foreground buildings.
I don't know... just something small. Nice Job! :buttrock:
