View Full Version : Exhaust components

Error404

for a few class projects, I'm creating a fake company called "Bucks Performance Exhaust", which, as the name states, fabricates performance exhaust parts for V8 applications. I will be modeling several different variations of Headers, Mufflers, pipes, tips, and other "shop" related items to fill up the scene.

I'll try to update this thread as I complete more components, and ultimatly, the final renderings. This is all going toward a website, a magazine ad, and a CD interface in Director for some of my classes.

Anyway, here are the goods:

You'll notice something odd about the socket wrench (last image) ... first one to pick it out gets... um... nothing really, but see if you can figure it out.

Yea, the metal is actualy a light grey, but looks blueish at times because of the reflections.

gorgeous renders... quick question...how did you model the welds on the joins of the manifolds? they look so detailed and photorealistic.. what prog are you using?

do you mean the fact that you used a pentagon instead of a hexagon for the hole where the bolt goes in? :D

Yeah, can you provide us with some more detailed info ? Like your render/lighting/hdri/material settings ? Nice work!

LoneLobo : yea, you got it! :D I thought it would be more difficult... aww well :hmm: next time.

I'm using 3D Max 5.1, I'm primaraly using Polymodeling (starting with a flat plane), and for the header tubes, I am lofting a circle onto a NURBS CV path.

As for rendering, it's just HDRI, nothing real complicated. :)

Here is the magazine add so far (scaled down). Yea, I know the logo isn't the best... I'm not to good at logos. I'm toying with the "Matrix" effect with the exhaust components... but my roommate suggested I totaly rip of the Matrix and have shelves there also... and I think I'm gonna do it just to be funny! :D

Hey man ;) the metal looks fantastic! And surely you don't suffer from the lack of sense for details! Nice!

Man, your models and lighting is great!

I will make a few suggestions for the ad tho:

The red on black surface makes it a hard read, for me of course.

You have totally seperated the text from the render, which is a bad thing. It gives me the impression the guys at Bucks wrote the text and cut out a real nice photo from another magazine, glued them. Make your text bleed into the picture, I know it is hard for you cover over your precious render, but you have to feel easy covering a part of it with something else. This is the most important part on a page design.

It is not that I have any qualification to say this, but that is what I believe and see. The page style lets down such a proffessional work.

I would change the fonts for the explanation text also.

I hope you consider my suggestions, I think it will really enhance the page design.

Why don't you model the logo in 3D, too?

hesido thanks for the suggestions for the rest of the ad, I'm going to change some stuff. I spent most of my time doing the exhaust models anyway

mwkmn I didn't think of that... I'll try some 3d logos and see how it works  Thanks!

I'll have to agree with hesido, I'll modify the add a little in photoshop and post it, if you dont mind...

cannot be arsed to w8 for your reply ;)
so heres the ad with my touch on it... I didnt change the text, just layout and font, you should change the text... it aint really "professional" imo it sounds like one of those TV-shop commercials...

Thanks for the example!! Much appreciated! I guess I should have payed more attention when we were studying Typography

I'll post up with new versions (yea, I'm going a bit overkill for this project, but it will be for my portfolio).

Oh, what style of font would yall suggest for the "info" at the bottom? I just picked one that was readable.

Times new roman, its a classic when it comes to info text, and it has a professional look (thats the one I used on the example ad)

Bravo Error404,

Based on your work I would buy a set of exhausts!... even though I don't own a vehicle ;)

I like this idea better (for the main image), but the shelves seem to add a bit of confusion to the scene... I wanted to keep them black, but I'm not so sure that is going to work out. Anyone have an Idea on how to improve this scene?

Thanks!:D

for that particular scene, I'd try some more diffuse light... or change the color of the shelves

AtriaLenkki

Also, now that I look at it, it seems a bit blurry (not much but noticable if you look closley) meybe try another filter when rendering? as it is chromed metal, I think that it should look sharp ;)

Error404

by diffuse light, you mean, like a target or spot light or something?

I'll make the metal reflections more crisp, and give it another render :)

Thanks!

meybe ambitient light was the word I was looking for, making the metal a little brighter while the shelves stayed black... better illumination in general

Lookin good, error. You could try giving the racks a slight bit of colour to help differentiate them from the parts. Or maybe make the parts a little brighter, more silvery. I dunno, just throwin ideas at you.

Never seen a 5 sided nut before;) The pliers should have flatter handles and a it of nurling on them for grip. Other then that nice work. I have never seen tools that clean either, at least mine.

Why not keep them black but make them semi-transparent, like they were made of acrylic or something like that?

Best regards.

Thanks for all the suggestions, I'll look back over them when I get time to modify the scene.

Thanks!!

for a second i was wondering why would you choose to do exhaust systems but as you have a CAMARO it seems perfectly normal, if i had one my life would pretty much revolve around it!!

yea, and I can vouch that older (mine is an 86 Iroc) cars are WAY more expensive than a girl friend! My camaro hasn't left me yet! the girls on the other hand...
