Your question calls for a huge answer, but it seems that you are not even aware of sub object modes ?
I think you might want to try out a couple tutorials, maybe the ones that come with Max, else there is a great thread (sticky, on top of this forum), or the Joan of Arc tutorial that should get you going, but in the first place i guess that you should read a little about polymodeling and sub object modes in Max's helpfiles (or on the web), to find what it's all about.
Saying that because if you don't know how to select, say, a polygon or vertex, then you're probably going to have a hard time doing any of the above mentioned tuts...

now i found some good tuts about modeling. selecting polys was not the problem .. i was a bit confused when i wrote the question.. max makes you able to do so much .. i just was swamped with all this :D
but thanks anyway
meld dich mal in icq bei mir, ich hab da vielleicht was, was dir beim Boxmodeln helfen könnte :)
