Personally, I don't see how Adobe could make AE node-based without a complete re-write. Everything, including the vast array of plug-ins from third-party developers, is so fundamentally based on the layer paradigm that adding in a node flow would probably never amount to more than a hack or toy, just like the nodal view in AE is today.
"True" node-based compositors will always have certain advantages over AE, just like AE has certain advantages over the node-based approach.
