View Full Version : For Justin Bates
BigAl3D 12-02-2007, 02:29 PM Justin, the projects you've been a part of are nothing short of fantastic! As someone who is on the bottom end of working into the field, I was wondering a couple of things, knowing of course that these project encompas much more that just Cinema 4D.
In your Barclay example with all the particles, how long would you typically have to complete a project such as that? I'm sure many of us can create nice effects and animations, but never seem to have the time from the client to take it to that level.
Do you always create your projects with 3D in mind?
And lastly, did you knock-out the football players on a frame-by-frame basis or use some sort of automated technique?
Thanks for sharing your knowledge and your time!

Hi Alex
Thanks for the kind words. To answer some of your questions!
For the Premier Football titles it was all created in C4D and then all the elements that I rendered were composited in Flame. This last sequence was created and put together in probably around 6 to 7 weeks which includes sourcing all the VT footage and getting the edit signed off. However, this is the 4th version of this project that I've built, so from that point of view I knew where I was going and how to construct it. The first ever one I made, probably took around 4 months with the first 1 and half months working on building the stadium etc and R&D on the particle effects. That sounds a long time to spend making 15 seconds worth of graphics, however I was the only person to design, construct light/texture and animate any of these sequences. I am also very lucky that I have had and excellent Flame compositor working with me over the past few years, helping to put it all together. From his side of things, it takes over a month to just rotoscope all the players frame by frame so that I can use all the mattes to generate the particle effects.
As far as creating projects with 3D in mind, my answer is yes and no! All the big projects that I work on definately have a plan when it comes to 3D and visual effects. The Football sequence is a definate yes, as I always wanted to take the camera anywhere in the stadium. I wanted the control of the environment and besides that, it would of cost way too much to shoot a real stadium with these kind of moves.
Many of my other projects come into me where things have already been shot and I'm asked to see what I can do to make it look better. I actually quite like doing these kind of jobs, as they're normally tight deadlines and difficult to insert effects into shots that weren't shot with post work in mind.
I hope that I've managed to answer your questions
Cheers
Justin

Thanks for the great detailed answers! That's what I was thinking. The last three rounds of projects where I had 3d to make (nowhere near that complex), I'm lucky if I had a week.
I hope you could afford to eat during that project! :D
Thanks again for sharing some insights. :applause::applause::applause:
