View Full Version : Does Cinema play well on a notebook?

I'm traveling this Christmas for about 3 weeks and have to purchase a notebook (PC) to continue with some pretty poly intensive projects.

The best configuration I could find was a pricey Dell-XPS with all the bells and whistles.
4gigs Ram, Core2Duo @ 2.6ghz with a 512mb GCard.

But comparatively, do they play as well as a powerful desktop? Especially when crunching numbers and big scenes/rendering etc. The graphics card being the biggest concern..

I run it on my 15" MacPro which is about those Dell specs (Except I run 2Gb). And I find it extremely satisfying. It runs way faster than my older G5 desktop. Not quite my Quad desktop, but certainly capable. I find it so easy to use, I'll often just work on my laptop rather than turning on the Quad. However doing any rendering or running heavy expressions will kick my fan into high gear and suck crazy battery energy when not plugged in.

Obvious but you might overlook this.
If you use the numeric keys (1,2 and 3) to pan, zoom and rotate the viewport ... know that it's hard to do with just the regular touchpad, so you need an external mouse or other device.
On second though, not just only for the viewport navigation but for all actions I would recommend an external mouse.

I use a 15inch laptop as well and i will suggest to get an external monitor anything about 20inch and above and a cheap keyboard , it runs fine on mine.

Works fantastic on my 17 MacBook. I run 10.0 with an update. No complaints whatsoever.

If you can claim it for business, yes, it makes a good tax writeoff.

For PC laptops, the 'power' makes the difference. My previous Compaq Presario could not run Cinema 4D: too little power, not enough memory, slow cpu. My new laptop is Core 2 Duo with 2GB, GeForce Go 7600, 80GB drive. Handles Cinema 4D rather well. Not the best display though - a bit crowded at 1280x800. I agree with others who suggest using an external monitor with better resolution.

Well, if money were no object I might look at this HP!

Quote: "Do you demand premium audio/video, screaming performance, and unsurpassed style? Redefine your home PC experience with our cinematic HDX series, a brand-new class of notebook PC that merges awesome 20.1", dual-lamp displays with 15.5 lb. of portable performance."

20.1" display, 4GB mem, 1900x1200 resolution, etc, oh and a 10 key all for 4K. Personally, my wife would kill me, but it's worth drooling over. Good luck in your search...:D

I'm sure it's comparable to a pretty decent workstation (@JKirk01), but the price tag is out there, considering the need for replacements within only 2 years.

I built my quad-core for about $2200, the same configuration was listed at dell for well over $5000. It's a shame you can't do the same with laptops.

I used to work on a G5 2Mhz Dual. A few weeks ago I bought a 15" MacBook Pro and now exclusively work with it since I sold the G5.

I love it. I can work anywhere, in bed, while traveling, while watching TV next to the fireplace. Very satisfying. It takes a little time to get used to a smaller screen, but soon you get more innovative with it and build some good interfaces for modeling, texturing and animating. I also use a 20" flat screen monitor in my home office when needed but most of the time I work directly on the laptop screen.

I love my MBP. It also works great for PC apps. I play COD4 on my MBP without any problems. Why get a PC when you can get Mac and PC with one laptop? Maybe I could have a more beefed-up PC but then I would miss out on Leopard, a great system. Gotta love Time Machine man. I use a G-Drive for back-ups and an airport for my network. I can play movies wirelessly on my MBP from the G-Drive hooked on my old G4 (that still works great as a server). With a simple $20 adapter, I hook my MBP on the 40 inch LCD TV and watch movies. Can't be happier.

I used to work on a G5 2Mhz Dual.Wow, 2MHz. Didn't know they could even clock them that slow. :D

I love running 10.5 on my Dell Vostro 1700. I really had to have numeric keypad and I wanted a 17" HD screen. The Inspirons will do this as well. No probs running it at all.
