View Full Version : what software to paint Gollum?
Crazzy Legs 04-18-2003, 12:13 AM Now I know to some extent it really doesn't matter what software was used, so long as the artist found it usable and he was able to get the work done without having to worry about it to often, but I read in Cinefex that the software that was used was "Maya Studio Paint". I have never heard of this, was this a typo, did they mean Maya Paint 3D or is this a plug-in or a something else related to Maya. Thank you.

Alaiswavefront does have a product called Studio Paint that is a standalone 3d paint program. I think it is only avaaible for Irix so I don't know if they are still selling it or what.

Nope, it's not a type, they did use Studio Paint. It's a painting program from Alias. I'm not sure if it's still being developed though, it's a really old program.

I had acces to it years ago.. it cost $20k back then and Amazon Paint gave it a good run for the money.

Alias Power Animator cost more than that at the time (1996) .. There weren't many options for 3D paint at the time so you had to pay a premium to get it... I was a pretty good program though.

Yeah I guess that makes sense :)
And yep, I've heard it is a good program, especially since it has better colour space control (something to do with log and linear colour space) than Photoshop, which is why Weta prefer to use it. I think StudioPaint also has 16-bit painting.

I'm running Studio Paint at work on an Octane. :)
A/W told me about two years ago that they are not able to port it to any other OS. They currently are recommending Deep Paint 3D for working with Maya under Windows.
Keep your eyes open for some cool new 3D painting software coming your way later in the year. ;)

I took a quick gander at the web and I didn't find much related to Studio Paint. This might sound rediculas, but what is the difference between 3D Paint Tool Paint Effects and Studio Paint? I would imagine quite a bit, but I would just like to know what the calibur of the program is. The idea of it being used to create Gollum skin really doesn't describe its capabilities that much as far as it being an up-to-date program, since you can use old software to create great stuff as long as it does what you need.

It's been awhile since I have worked with it but I think besides the great paint tools it was better at working with patch models than anything else but that may have changed.
