View Full Version : LSU quarterback, what do you guys think?
jizzypop 11-30-2007, 02:04 AM Hi guys,
Here is a photoshop painting I did, it took a few hours. Crits and comments are welcome.
I'm fairly happy with it, though I feel its missing a 'wow factor' I was looking for. I'm not sure whats missing. I wasn't going for realistic, I wanted it to be sort of stylized.
Thanks guys.

Try making the background a different color scheme
In photoshop for example.
Select Background, Variations, More Green
Then invert selection, up the contrast on the qb.
My 2 cents

Here is another one I did.
With this one I tried to create my own lighting instead of just relying on the reference. I think it came out better than the 1st. It still needs some polishing up.

The second one has much better composition.
Don't be confused between "stylized" and "sloppy."
Your anatomy is NOT stylized. It needs work, in that your body proportions are VERY noticeably off, particularly the way you draw forearms. They are inconsistent from one side to the next in thickness and length.
Consistency is a very important consideration in any artwork, stylized or no...
You do a really nice job with shading and highlights for visual depth, but are not shading the muscles correctly, making them look weird (The forearm muscle just below the elbow in both images, for example). Good, clean, light souce rendering, and nice color palettes, whether bold or pastel.
Tighten up your general anatomy a bit, and you will have an awesome collection of good sports renderings!

Thank you for your comments CybrGfx, i think you are right about my anatomy and thats whats been bothering me. I am going to check some anatomy resources and work on that.

I thought I should mention the way I work in case its of any interest to anyone:
Its all on one layer and I only used a hard brush, no smudge tool. I used a wacom 4x5 to sketch it out and paint it. Total time is probably around 8ish hours.

Looks MUCH better!
For only one layer, with hard edged brushes, this came out really well.
GOOD JOB!
