View Full Version : Emitting light from object
AngelDream 11-29-2007, 06:02 AM Hi, I've been searching a bit but I can't find something on the topic of emitting light from an object. I want to simulate a video screen. Hence, I need the screen to emit some light. Could you please point me in the right direction? thank you very much.

I'm not an aged XSI user (barely 4 months comming from C4D :D), so I bet there are a lot ways to do this. But I should go for applying a video texture to a spot light.
Final Gather may work also.

If final gathering is an option try adding a grid. Give it a constant shader. Connect your projection texture to it. Turn on FG. Whammo.

I agree with the others. Final Gathering should do it.
Here is a nice XSI FG link: http://www.finalgathering.com/
Just look in the tutorial section.
You might need to turn up diffuse slider on the FG ppg. You might also put a grid with the display right over what you want to cast light on and turn off the primary ray (everything but secondary rays) in visibility ppg for the grid.
Making your screen constant material won't work in FG. Instead add a toon material to the screen: Material / Toon
If you put a constant material, you'll see the screen wash out . The toon shader keeps the colors constant while everything else has soft shadowing from diffuse light in FG. Not sure if screen will not contribute to diffuse light in sceen, but as mentioned, just add an extra one with visibilty turned off to cast diffuse light where you need.
You can also attach a texture to a light source.
Hope this helps,

thank you very much!! I was able to create the effect using the constant shader as you adviced. I'm trying later the toon shader, it's true, the constant gives a bit washed look, but I already had set the objects up like visualboo said.
As for the ctrl.studio shader, they are not around xsibase anymore, and I don't know about the site, but here's a bunch of links

I've been trying toon shader as Ohmanoggin said, and I think it works even better. Not only it has diffuse shading, but also... is it possible that it renders a bit faster? I think it does so, just a little, but in a sequemce it does make the difference. Thanks Ohmanoggin.
