Check out our latest promo for the Mitsubishi Lancer. We got the job through Sony Tropfest (http://www.tropfest.com/), which picked up Mitsubishi as a sponsor and got together with PBL to get filmmakers to create 6 x "Supershorts" for the new Lancer.

We used Maya to create and animate the car as well as the cut-out style monsters. Doing something different, we used the new timeline feature of Photoshop CS3 to do the 2D animation - and it works pretty well!

Check out the full spot here (http://www.tropfest.com/) and tell us what you think.

You can also see some of the behind the scenes stuff in my blog, www.pradeclassified.com (http://www.pradeclassified.com/).

Also, you also have the chance of winning the Lancer advertised. All you need to do is choose your favourite "Supershort" off the site (http://tropfest.ninemsn.com.au/supershortseries), then click on the vote button on the right and fill in your details. So get in the draw to win a sports car and at the same time give a vote for animation! Let the Ad Agencies and marketing execs out there know that they can make more original car ads!

Pretty Good. Has a moderate resemblance to a scrapped disney project " where the wild things are". It's still pretty good professional work, good luck.

Thanks Kyoshi,

We're big fans of Maurice Sendak here and his influences are in more than a few of our works. One of the things that sets our creative direction apart is that we have a lot of 2D illustrators as influences like Alan Aldridge, Mark Ryden, Gary Baseman, Tim Biskup etc.

I think Where the wild things has an interesting adaptive history - John Lasseter made an experimental 3D short adaptation at Disney before being fired in the 80s, and there's a feature lenghth version being produced in Australia (or at least a big chunk of it) directed by Spike Jonsz. I'm kind of glad we got the TVC out before the feature!

One of the unique things about this promo, is unlike other promos we got to do all of the creative - including coming up with the idea and writing it up. I've always wanted to produce a car commercial, but given that the bulk of them are VFX heavy, and our studio is more stylised, i didn't think we'd get the chance. so i was real glad to get thiis one. We just went completely the other way and picked something with a bit more of a 2D feel, and Maurice Sendak provided a lot of the inspiration!

I love the feel of the spot. Maurice Sendak is one of my favorite artists and I instantly recognized the resemblance to his work (even down to the suit the kid is wearing:D ).
Great stuff.

Awesome to see full 2d animation for the main characters! Very cool that photoshop can animate now! Does it have a built in onion skinning feature?

Saw this plugged on the front page and was all "Wah! Sweet!".

Animating cut out characters is so much fun :arteest:
I even did some colouring in Photoshop, man does that program rock.

Can't wait to see Ed 'n' Ari's short The Cat Piano (http://catpianofilm.blogspot.com/) when it's done.

So great! Nice to see this kind of ad for a change. That little tiger kid is so adorable.... not that I'm biased or anything.

Excellent work. Great use of color and lighting. The little boy in the Tiger suit adds more to the "safer" mood you were going for....I used to have those footie pajamas when I was a kid and thought they were the best things to walk around in. You just felt like your body was in another shell safe from the outside. Props to all who contributed to the piece. Take care!

Hi Hugh, I would say this is a very awesome piece! Love it!
Everything are fantastic can beautifully done. But the only comment is when the kid turn her head, it's a bit off model. But overall is great. 5 STARS

It's a really beautiful & wonderfully executed ad. Top marks on a job well done.

Maurice Sendak provided a lot of the inspiration!

I saw the plug on the front page and immediately thought this was someone's adaptation of Where the Wild Things Are.

The boy's even in an animal costume!

Not to mention the end of the advert puts an emphasis on the word Wild...

I appreciate that you've acknowledged your influences & as I've said the advert really does look great - it just makes me sad that in an original production with complete creative freedom so much of the design is lifted from one of my childhood favourites.

Hey Josh,

it's great to hear from you man! certainly miss having you round the place. Your cut-out is always stirling (i refer to mermaids and Carnivore Reflux - vomit specialist. I know you did a lot of work on the car in the Lancer TVC, but did you do any of the cut-out monsters too? i remeber Brodie doing a lot of it. Anyway, i hope Krome is treating you well and that you're not forgeting everything you know in Maya! Make sure you keep in touch, cos for you to move from one gig to the next without us at least seeing if we have something for you and get you in would be a travesty! take care man!

Thanks for the feedback mate,

Your reel is incredible and you've worked on some amazing looking stuff - great spread of stylised, character, effects and design based stuff.

I like your film too

Thanks Nathan,

Photoshop does have an onion skinning feature which helps. I'm a big fan of good 2D animation, and i think with tools like photoshop there's a lot of potential to bring it back and see a lot of high quality stuff come out of small teams and visionaries who work on their own.

Thanks Julian,

I'll have to take a look at that again. oddly enough the kid was designed to be a boy, althoigh you're not the first to mention that it looks like a girl - perhaps there's a bit of androgyny in there that's giving it a bit more appeal (or confusion!).

The thing that freaks me out the most in the animation is when the kid, "Mikey", covers his gigantic manga-esque eyes with his little hands and they're like the same size! lol.

glad you liked it man!

Thanks Alex,

Our work draws upon a lot of inspiration from the works of many great artists, photographers, animators and filmmakers, and without their contributions to the artistic consciousness, our work wouldn't be what it is and resonate as much with the people who enjoy them. so it's always important for us to ackowledge them.

CheersIt's a really beautiful & wonderfully executed ad. Top marks on a job well done.

Thanks James,

Style is really important to us and we put a lot of effort into getting it right before we start. we didn't have heaps of time on this one, and i'm sure the directors would have liked to take a bit longer, but they still had a pretty good idea of what they wanted - a mangaesque take on Sendak that journeys into the world of old school cut-out animation!

I think this is great, you guys did a awsome job on the look ans style of the whole thing.

Beautiful!

I love the style and feel. It's always nice to see 2d work since everything is done the other now. It's also a relief to hear the people are allowed to be as creative as they want to. ^^;

Fantastic work!

Just wanted to offer a hearty congrats on the piece... it's great to see something anime-style up on the front page. Great use of blended media - 3D, traditional cel and cutout styles.

The character art and animation style reminds me a lot of the current animation being done for the show The Boondocks. Very well done - keep up the great work.

Hey everyone,

thanks for taking a look at our work and giving such great feedback. I think that the marketing and ad agency guys out there need to know that people are intersted in seeing something deifferent in their ads - after all many of you guys are their market!

There's a great way to let these guys know and get in the draw to win the Lancer advertised in the same guy. visit the site (http://tropfest.ninemsn.com.au/supershortseries), select the "Safer" supershort, click the vote button on the right and fill our your details.

a vote for us is a vote for animation!

good luck!

Yeah, i think this feature on CS3 will help bring many traditional animators back to the fold. one of our animators uses a cintique tablet that you can draw straight on - it's like a paperless animators work desk!

Sweet short. I like the mix of all techniques. All you needed was some stop-motion in there!
I think AJ's point is that you can't say the piece was merely inspired by Sendak when it was so clearly referencing his most famous work throughout. Inspired is not the right word. "Based on" or "homage to" may be more appropriate. And in those cases, I would quibble with the accuracy of the word "original" too.

EDIT: also, make simple directions to your work and edit the OP to include them. I had to hunt for it.
