View Full Version : can maya work on a mac with a single button mouse?
sinistar 04-17-2003, 05:55 PM Im going to be using Maya here at my internship but most of the computers have single button mice. Is there a work around for this or should I try and find a three button mouse?
If anyone could provide any information on using Maya on a Mac i'd appreciate it. Especially coming from a PC background. I also am curious if there is a way for me to import preferences from a PC as I have a pretty heavyset prefs folder.
Thanks

"A three button mouse is strongly recommended. "
It is possible but your workflow would be severely inhibited.
Buy a three button mouse for the Mac.

Look in the installation notes for mac. It is some env variable that you set. The thing is you can get any old 3 button usb mouse for $10 and it will work fine. OSX supports most multi button mice by default(ie.. it doesn't have to be a mac specific mouse, just anything that is usb).

I believe you can import them, but you have to fix the carriage returns in all the files. When you say PC I am assuming you mean Windows. Windows has a different way of identifying newlines in a text document from most unixes. All the prefs are a bunch of text files so when you move to osx the newline or "carriage returns" get read in wrong so it reads the prefs as one big line of text. Just search the web for a utility that will fix them, there are probably hundreds of them out there.

if you go for anything other than kensington (so ive been told), youll need a 3rd party driver. USB-Overdrive is great and supports middle clicking (the feature lacking in macally mouses). I used Maya for about a week with a one button mouse by modifying the Maya.env file in your prefs. I must say, working in Maya requires a lot of use of key combinations as it is, and throwing in others to mimmic mouse buttons makes it VERY confusing...get a 3 button mouse. I use a Macally icemouse with the scroll wheel as middle click...works great.
