i think short term it might be good, but long term, not so good
if apple bought A|W and is keeping things secret right now - they might actually be the ones behind the massive price drop. Apple might be looking for a mass marketable 3d app and looks at A|W.
let's say A|W is interested in apple buying them. Apple wants a very low cost 3d app they can market to everyone just like final cut pro. If Apple bought A|W and then dropped the price, people would hang apple for doing it. But if A|W did it, people would just go "what the hell? ...ok well whatever"
Apple then 6 months later announces they have officially bought A|W and is now shipping "the world's most powerful 3d software on the world's most advanced operating system" - you KNOW steve would go nuts with saying something like that. "and it's available... for EVERYONE"
mac users will run around thinking apple is being so innovative and really leading the industry yet again just like with final cut pro. They'll start building in specific OSX functions into the OSX version and release it a month or so before the other versions.
so in the short term, A|W might get more funding put into them and apple will want to show how THEY are innovating maya and will want maya 5 to be released when they announce it. But in the long run, it will probably hurt maya's market by focusing more on the OSX version.
