View Full Version : Holly with berries
Irate-Velociraptor 11-28-2007, 07:36 AM It doesn't look right. I'm thinking their are problems with the edges and some of the veins.
Anyone have any suggestions?

Your problem is all your green is the same shade of green. You need to have a range of value. This will help to determine what leaf is on top and which one is behind. This will allow you to get rid of the outline around the edge. I notice you started to correct that in the top leafs. Just continue doing so, and then work the values.
Hope that helps.

It just doesn't look like holly. It looks like some weird digital version of what someone who never saw holly might imagine it to be...
A simple Web Search at Google Images with the keywords "Ilex aquifolium" (Not even "European Holly") brings up more than enough reference images to show you that the color of your leaves is waaaaay too neon green, the veining is downright wonky, and two sad little holly berries plonked onto the end just ain't gonna cut it...
holly doesn't look like a weird, leafy comet shape, it is a branch, with leaves growing in all directions, with the berries at the end of the branch, on small stems.
Look at the following:

Maybe if you toned down the saturation a bit, and added at least 3-4 more berries...

Thanks your comments were helpful.
I've kept 2 of the leaves that were there and the berries then added some more now I need to do some work to the leaves I've added.

This is much better!
The first version looked too digital becaus of the sharp outlines you used.
This here looks more natural like a painting.
Keep a look to the reference pictures - this always helps...
