View Full Version : animating fast moving object
jsahn 11-27-2007, 11:14 PM hello,
i'm animating a fast moving arrow against a forest background.
can you tell me the most efficient way to simulate the speed?
the camera is following the arrow, but to make the background pass fast, i need to have more paint effects trees and the arrow needs to travel a greater distance, which is beyond what my computer can handle. what would be the best way to do this without compromising the quality.
thanks in advance,
jsahn

Well the biggest thing I can suggest is lots of motionblur. Most all scenes with a fast flying arrow only hints at the forest, you can't really see any detail. I would say put together two huge forest images (either in MAYA or in a compositing program) and have one as a background and the other as the foreground tree passing between the camera and arrow that has alpha on it. You could probably get away with a fairly low resolution image for this if memory is low.
Is this what you needed?

And perhaps adjusting the depth of field (DOF) so that the arrow is in focus and the background is not - which would give allot of motion blur! ;)

thanks for your reply.
i tried motion blur using after effects and had to rule out DOF, since it was an expensive render. i had to have a significant amount of motion blur to the point where you can tell what's in the background. in short, i change the background to alpha images and have the object travel a greater distance as it would in the real world. otherwise, the sense of speed didn't come across.
again, thanks,
jsahn
