When sketching with a tablet in PS or Painter what is the quickest or most effecient way of cleaning up lines for a fair sized print 8' 11''? Would it be best to do sketches at lower resolution (ex.800x600) to start with, then size up and go over the top of your lines on another layer? Or sketch and clean at a high resolution (ex. 3000x4000) to begin with? Or would a better method be to work on paper then scan to what ever size is needed then clean those lines...?
It becomes a difficult/tedious process cleaning up lines at higher resolution. It takes a day or more to clean up and adjust most of the time.

Why not put all your lines or line work on their own layer. After you are satisfied with the finished work, delete them or just erase any un-needed.

The lines are on a seperate layer and that's not the part slowing me down. Thinking a bit more on my issue I think I've figured it out. Cleaning up lines by hand on paper I have no problem, goes quite fast. If I zoom out in PS or Painter and use the same steady hand going over lines using my 9x12 intous 3 it just isn't able to lay down a clean line unfortunately. When zoomed back in it's quite boxy in shape... and fixing it zoomed in puts me back to the very slow clean up process.. Maybe the best method for me would be to sketch then print then clean by hand then scan again. Wonder if it's a driver issue? or not enough sensors in the tablet? or Vista? hehe Anyhow if anyone else has any comments on how they work or have run into this feel free to let me know.
thanks,

To do super accurate lines, you'll need to do some vector work. It's what I do to model some jewelry designs for either Cad work or photo engraving.

An example is here;

The original size of this was 6000 wide, this image is 10% of that resolution. But it's the only way I know to get super accurate work.
Another thing you might consider is to tape a piece of copy paper over your Wacom tablet. It gives you a bit of drag enabling you to get just a bit finer control of your stylus.

Edit, This was done totally in Painter, although, I was very tempted to work with Illustrator and Photoshop. I just received CS3 and am not totally comfortable with it yet. I did do a rough sketch, and then created shapes to work out the fine detail. Then deleted the sketch.

Hey Tom, The copy paper taped on the tablet is a great idea thanks! I figured out yesterday if you are working with a say 4000x4000 300dpi page in photoshop and you zoom out to 50% and begin drawing, when you zoom back in your lines will be blocky. I did the same test in Corel Painter IX and found this does not happen! You get a nice smooth line when zoomed back in. Sooo I know now sketching, cleanup, and color seems to be better in Painter. I've been using Photoshop for at least 10 years now and I'm quite surprised at this problem in the software(CS2). I don't know if it has been addressed in CS3 but I'm now learning Painter and enjoying it.
thanks again,
Nymb
