View Full Version : Animation Reel
PGillette 11-27-2007, 06:55 PM I've recently updated my reel with some samples from the work I've done over the past year. It's mostly animation from projects at work but there are a few personal pieces in there as well. Let me know what you guys think. I'll be using this feedback to make the next update better. Thanks in advance.

It was okay, but some of the characters didn't have enough movement like the tank and crane - They seemed so limited - and thus not a good showpiece for your animation. The first character animation was the best I think, but the ball needed more squash and stretch. The cat was pretty good. What was that last character at the end - a popcorn kernel? He was too obscure and not engaging enough. No facial expressions to speak of. I think you have talent, but, your reel doesn't do you justice. Hope that is helpful.

Thanks for the crits.
The tank and the backhoe are enemy characters from a couple of DS games I was working on. Sadly, due to the design I had to stay fairly conservative with their animations. I agree that they could be more exciting but I think as DS animations they work fairly well.
I'm assuming the "cat" you are referring to is the lion. Thanks.
The last guy is ineed a popcorn kernel. He was part of a pantomime project and therefore has no face.
I will be doing my best to keep updating my work with more personal projects like the robot.
Thanks again for the crits.

Pat,
I love the robot...both the model, animation, and the render. It has that super clean look but came out really nice....If you ever want to open that model up to other animators, I would love to run it through the motions. ..Keep up the good work and I look forward to seeing more of your work in the future.

seems alittle bloated right now, you gotta remember if an animation isnt awesome, dont put it on there.
just because you worked on it at a company, doesnt mean another company wants to see it, they can see from your resume if you worked somewhere.
all they care about is seeing your skill set and awesomeness.
i'd get rid of all the 2d stuff, including the older water droplet animations, get rid of the audition, its old and no need.
and keep one or two of the in-game animations, like the werewolf, but no need for the crane animation, maybe keep the tank animation but shorten it to just show a "shooting" loop or something.
right now, the thing that'll shine is the robot, its the most interesting and polished of the bunch.

Yeah, I agree with Colin in the respect that you should just keep the reel to 1 minute, only your best stuff. I think you could save the 2d stuff for a 2d reel for jobs looking for more flash-based animation or casual games (iWin, etc..). Animations I'd like to see the robot do - harcore sprint, a good walk and something really heavy that makes him stress a lot.

Holy cats! Thanks for the comments everyone!
Tominia - I'd be happy to release the robot as a free rig but sadly he's still a work in progress. I plan on doing more animations with him and as that happens I always find more ways to tweak him. So it could be a while but I will post him when I think he's worth posting. Thank you for the compliment though!
Will and Colin - Very good points one and all. I definitely plan on getting in some more basic acting work as apposed to game cycles. As far as cutting the latter half of the reel I can definitely see doing that at some point when I have some new stuff but until then they'll hang out in the back. I agree that the robot is the shining achievement of the reel and I plan on adding to that collection and with those additions I'll be able to kill the older stuff.
Thanks everyone
