View Full Version : My try on velvet...
I'm curious what you people think about my try on a sort of velvet material. I made this some time ago now and with the recent velvet threads I thought I'd share. Even though it's an extremely simple material made in a couple of mins, I think it looks kinda ok.
I'd like to get some c&c on the material itself and on the drapped cloth. Wich I modelled by hand as I didn't know about any other cheap way to achieve that... :hmm:

Ah, bummer. I can only upload images. :thumbsdow
I tried to post the actaul file alongside but alas...

this is cool. maybe a darker/deeper red colour....also velvet is usually quite a thick material...so just thicken up the plane/model and will con viewer into believing. other than that...fine..good work.
:thumbsup:
can i look at file..or can you post your settings....cos like you i've been reading the old velvet thread...but didn't have ago..but always useful to see how others use materials. thanks.

Nice try!:thumbsup:
I put a fresnel in the color channel from white (outside) to red with a very smooth transition.
And the exact specular settings are:
Width=95%
Height=32%
the rest 0%
Even simpler than I originally thought I made it... :rolleyes:
Yeah, I'm a minimalist (trying to make my shamefully simple material sound proffesional :p).
It's too bad we can't just post the C4d file's...

cool thanks for that...
simple is cool...if ya get the result...which i think you managed.
:thumbsup:
pretty good. I would think maybe try adding some bump or diffusion to itto makeit less regular.
here is my velvet which is a combo of chanlum and SLA.

Rather than using white, use a lighter variation of your "base" color. Then copy your Fresnel gradient to the Luminance channel. Set the dark color much darker this time, almost black, set the mode to add and play with a low percentage, mixed with a black color as the Luminance base color. Attached is a recent, though hardly great, example of this down and dirty approach. I love Chanlum as much as the next guy, but rarely have the time for the tweaks.

Thanks for the comments all.
Below is my latest result, I think it defenatly improved quite alot (meaby only a bit too dark), but now my crystal bol is being weird.
@JIII
Originally I had a bump on it but it didn't look good, I think velvet is to thick for such small details. although I agree it's somewhat too clean.
@mrblifil
I tried your aproach for a bit and I did get some interesting results. I think I'll try some more later as your cushions look real good.
@Flingster
I agree it looks too thin but unfortunatly I modelled it with a Bezier NURBS. I may make a seperate edge decoration or such to make it look a bit thicker, other suggestions are very welcome as I'm afraid that will be quite labor intesive. [EDIT] :lightbulb: Oh wait, I can always change it into a poly mesh...
:beer:
Can anybody tell me why my bol is still so dark while the background is clearly lighter...?

Its a background object, because they dont reflects(?).
Could be a compisite tag too...

this is a lot harder than it looks....!!!
used kirls method and mrblifil
and ended up with silk material...:wip:

That's an interesting looking thing you got there (how on earth did you made that). :)
But I think it's easier to preview your material on a more smooth surface. Like a plane with a flag deformer. so you can clearly see the transitions of the specular and fresnel.

Here's my try.
I used it in my 'behind the curtains' scene:

Ooooh, nice one. :thumbsup:
How did you make it?

Kirl: started off as a plantonic..believe it or not! ...was supposed to look like scrunched silk...:wip:
handige_harrie: funky example...worth noting the levels on the sliders...and the noise type used. i think its more like a heavy duty velvet...eg curtains than say a dress or something though.
On velvet its also worth noting that if you brush your hand over it..you leave a mark as the weave is then facing slightly in a different direction and catches the light differently...i tried to mess around with this tonight...with not very good results i might add...but i think i would go with sema to get that line look to the noise then probable scale it to about 1200-2000 then wash it out so there is a slight difference between the colours...then include in a fusion channel and maybe come up with something different...not sure it would work on handige_harrie's as the roughness is well to rough...but maybe suitable for some of the other thinner guage cloths.
have fun....
Latest attempt, I used mrblifil's idea. Getting closer and closer to just the right look.
I'll now try the thing you mentioned about the diffrent angles of the hairs a bit...
try diffuse for changing the hairs around. use a noise that is has a really really high scale to it. so you dont get any repeating patterns.
here is my second try at velvet.

My velvet was based on a SLA cheen material. I didn't really change a lot. Check the file to see how and what.
It is kind of a heavy duty velvet (indeed, meant for curtains).
But I did tried mimicing Fiona's velvet dress (as seen in Shrek). That was what we are aiming for if I remember correctly.

Using Harrie's material setting - thanks HH :-)
Cheers,

Nice to hear I've been helpful :).
You're welcome.
Thanks for sharing, I'll have to wait for a bit to really see how you done it though, as I'm still using 7... but for the moment my last try will do.
Thanks anyway! :thumbsup:
hmm as a public service thingy I will post pics of the shader.
tell me if you dont want these up here handige I will take them down.
sorry about the size I had to get them compressed as heck.
thats all there is to it folks.
