Dironik 11-27-2007, 11:15 AM Hi. :)
I don't have artistic education, but now I learn to draw a humans.
In this connection I want to post some stages of my last attain of
drawing human face. Here I don't try to attain photorealism, but
I try to achieve fine skin shading. Maybe there is some mistakes,
but I hope this post will be usefully for somebody.
Part1. Building the form.
In this stage I draw rough form of head.
http://img153.imageshack.us/img153/1218/37228317dz4.jpg
Part2. Line drawing.
And now I detailed form and in the result I get it:
http://img406.imageshack.us/img406/1122/65629010fe2.jpg
Part3. Start of colorring.
Here I choosed basic color.
http://img148.imageshack.us/img148/980/44693608op9.jpg
Part4. Hightlighting.
In this stage I defining main light source and on the grounds of this
drawing yellowish highlights.
http://img151.imageshack.us/img151/6233/49182054ck3.jpg
Part5. Shadowing.
Then I draw dark areas on face using for this dark red color:
http://img153.imageshack.us/img153/4852/58817786ua0.jpg
Part6. SSS.
I don't know how it correctly named, but in 3D it named as SSS. So I get
red color and on edges of dark areas I made skin more red.

Part8. Back hightlight.
Then I added back highlight and background color.
http://img407.imageshack.us/img407/7096/12jj0.jpg
Part9. Finishing.
And then I detailed remained.

Hey there, looks like you have a solid approach! :) I might suggest also trying some grayscale studies as well - check out some of the Grayscale / Skull painting links here:

Looking forward to your progress. :)

It's very helpful of you to show your approach to drawing. Are you planning to put some of your 3D work up as well?

Thanx :)
No. Here I planning put only 2D sketches. Maybe some later in other thread, but I don't think so..
Easy to read the progressions in the last piece, and a neat classic drawing style on that one. In the prior piece (jeans wearing girl on mid tone grey) the neck shoots up from the rib cage further to the left then I'd expect. For the pelvis to be that far forward you'd expect the chest to be thrown back a touch so the head would be a bit more centered.
Seems like you've got a solid grasp of the fundmentals to work from, look forward to seeing more :)

Hey Dmitriy!! Great stuff here, dude!! One little suggestion I could give is to flip your image horizontally often while you work to check for mistakes in construction or alignment, which can escape your eyes when you work for long on a picture and get used to its minor errors. By flipping the image, you "shock" your eyes into noticing all the odd spots!!
Keep rocking, buddy!!

Hi Dmitriy, I really like your painting work. And that one you did of a man's face, only 25mins, wow! I gotta work more on learning how to do that :p
Your last painting, even though it's not exact, really is good. Her eyes especially have a lot of life to them. I think the one on the right is smaller than the left one however, also probably could be spaced farther apart.
