View Full Version : enviroment: small piece of the whole
huuu,
i started making the enviroment for the first intro
of my "short film" ( dream on  )
the tree is made by hand... no plugin
i work with 3ds max 5.1 (image rendered in vray)
the grass is my first try
i will change it fully (less grass, other arrangement)
textures will come next....
Xaya
PS: this isnīt the full scene only a little view :D

The tree looks very good! A little bit darker and it would fit to Sleepy Hollow! The thinner branches look a bit irregular. Is it going to have leaves?

Nice, but look at the edges...to sharp. I wouldn't use Vray..
But that is your own choice. good work

great work....More grass!!!
:scream:
rrobert

yep, more grass indeed.
Can still see the grond..
i wouldnīt say itīs too sharp but itīs sharp thatīs right!
well,
vray (only have a demo)
i really like the GI and the displace-rendering is also nice IMO
but you also right
i read a few minutes ago that displacement-mapping
in vray isnīt developed fully and itīs slow
(u can read it on www.vray.info)
well i also have brazil but i havenīt got success aiming a good lightning....
and the displace. isnīt the same .... donīt know why
(perhaps because of the better GI of vray)
Xaya :p

looks really good.. so make a textures
i prefer procedural then foto...
more grass???
donīt think so... (or?)
i mentioned i do some wasteland at this area.... only few grass
(also the rendering time isnīt a good choice to make more grass
- i want to do some animations, you should know :D )
THX
Xaya
grrrrrrr........
is there any option to accelerate displacement map + gi ???
(desided to choose brazil instead of vray)
iīm going to be crazy
max crashes every 15 min
but i donīt know why
the grass rendering takes too much time... and so on
Xaya
:annoyed: :annoyed: :annoyed:
well,
i donīt go forward,
i havenīt got much time, max crashes too often
(while testing modeling/texturing experiments)
well i also have problems to get what i want have
here is a sketch i drew with pencil
(to much twists/too much branches, i know ;) )
it should shown a scene of the landscape
(it is just a little part of the whole :D )
perhabs i show u more sketches (we will see)
the problem is: how can i get realistic cliff?
i tested displacement mapping but i donīt
get good results and it is so slow..
and 3ds max displacement isnīt the best IMO
but i have to use it nevertheless
the ocean is more or less completed....
so if you have a solution ... ;)
http://members.lycos.co.uk/xaya/2DSC200474.jpg
PS: whatīs the best technique to model the cliff/ landscape??
(by now, i did all with polys but it takes soo long...
a displacement/relief map isnīt good here in my opinion...)

you can get really good results w/o gi, and besides, gi is notoriously slow... i would suggest doing manual lighting, though i dont have any tips for this...
you are right blindsleeper,
i already thought about this problem...
i will change it next time
(i even saw that GI and the water surface doesnīt look as good as witout /normal light)
i read a lot about non-GI lightning-techniques in the last weeks
but at the moment i havenīt got the time do test my new knowledge...
THX

no more replies? :annoyed:
well,
big update...
i did the landscape i had in my head
and i think the result is quite good.
i used: e-light for lightning (only bump map / no texture)

:annoyed: :annoyed: ....
critizise me!!!

I think it's coming on well. Maybe the grass could be more irregular ie: had some bare patches with no grass at all, and vary the height of the rest...:)
small update...

The way you did the ground is REALLY very realistic. Can't wait to see it textured
looks good maybe some water to surround it ?
thank you for replies!
well,
yes i want to do some water (ocean)
in front of the cliff
but how to aim a good solution???
I mean, perhaps it looks a little strange if the water just goes up and down.
For realism i would need high tides splashing on the cliff.
Do i need some stuff like "Realwave" or can i do it also with max-intern possiblities???
THX
Xaya
well, no help?
I already started to model a new tree, which i want to place on the edge on the cliff
(similar in looking to the first one at this thread, but bigger, more boughs/branches and more roots...)
this one i did by hand i am not happy with the result... (150k)
http://members.lycos.co.uk/xaya/ffdsdd.jpg
i thought i want to have a forest at the background... (spruces)
but how to do them...???
should i use planes for the branches (texture and alpha-map)
or is there a better solution or a good plugin...

MY GOD!!
How did you ever acieve (spelled right??) that realism of the rocks????
Explanation please. :applause:

Man that looks Gr8 !!
I would like to see some wire of the ground !!
rrobert

INDEED!
.. is it bumpmap or actually wireframe??? interesting... :)
I am happy that you like it!
The exact way i achieve this look, i want to keep in secret
(perhaps i explain it sometimes... :D)
well i used both bump mapping and edgy modelling...
The lightning isnīt perfect... i work on it...
i also will add textures next time
Is there nobody how can help me with my problems...
THX
Xaya
PS:I will add wireframe-image tomorrow
well,
for the forest I would just use low poly trees (3 sided branches etc.)
but it depends on the density of your forest
otherwise use a real forest (photo).
and common..
please tell us how u did it!!

Ahem.....:shame: That is not very nice of you to say this I think..
Unless it is a GREAT discovery.
But you don't have to explain is.. then we will just admire your work!
By the way: "Es ist sehs nett !!! " (good german??) :p :p :p
well, here is a small update (tweaked the tree, but isnīt final)
http://members.lycos.co.uk/xaya/asta.jpg
mhh,
i donīt know if i should use somethink like only texture-shapes for the forest...
it would be the easiest way but probably not the best...
on the other side i want to do an animation with this scene...
and the rendertime is around 1-3 min, at the moment...
i will at first test the textureshapes (for forest)
and when it isnīt as good as i want to have it
i model some trees....
well the secret.......:lightbulb
ok i think i can say it to u,
i mean i really learned much from u guys at this forum...
and ok
the trick is:
use a noise-modif.
and mesh-smooth
and a good bump map
thatīs all...
:p :p
@Straightmark
not good german, but i know what u mean...:D THX
Xaya
PS: some good plugins to make the shapetextureforest realistic
I had some trouble with the upload at my webhost
well,
here is a update,
the ocean and sky was modifiered in painter (nice effect IMO)
i havenīt found any plugin for the forest,
perhaps somebody can help me with this one and give me some tips...

Does the last link work???
Just ask because a frend of me got a error message....
and nobody replied until no....
the same as in the last.... i think the last didnīt work

many replies, please!!!

this is great what but what about that wire, and all the links worked for me

yes, i promised that i show u some wire-frame-images,
but itīs nothing special...
nevertheless, tomorrow i will show them
ok here is a wireframeshot
itīs all without meshsmooth (= what i had to model...)

Haha easy to show us the wire without the mesh smooth. It much more clear to see what you really made WITH the mesh smooth. That would give us the right impression..
(Okay, I know. I'll stop wining and complaining) :p :p
mhhh, well i thought u can imagine the meshsmooth...
ok, here is an image WITH meshsmooth (iteration 4)
(although iteration 3 is enough...)
http://members.lycos.co.uk/xaya/wire2.jpg
mhh, self-discussions isnīt my favour, but no matter...
I downloaded the plant/flora program xfrog for a while (trail version),
the results are awesome but the polycount too...
xfrog tune (for poly tweaking) is good but
the thought that i want to get a forest and do a animation
kills the linear idea...
at the moment import the trees which i made in xfrog to 3ds max
and render them in front-view ... so i get textures and alphamaps
(or is there a good resource-page with such textures???)
perhaps somebody can help me... or just critizise.... :D
Xaya
fast update,
i added trees in the background (one-side shapes)
the atmoshere isnīt as good as in the last one
(the wrong atmosphere):
http://members.lycos.co.uk/xaya/wip2.jpg
but also nice IMO
I will probably use scatter to place the trees irregularly...next time
donīt know if this method works good for animation but i will see

Your rockmodel really rocks! :buttrock:
I really like the rough look it got, very nice work :)
thx,
well i will work on the textures now...
i change the material (for the beach)
add some grass (find a good (and free) plugin called:
grass-o-matic
I simultanly work on with my old female character
(is a character in the story... but just have to learn rigging and skinning... :D )
c&c please
