Title: Hanagumori
Name: Diane Özdamar
Country: France
Software: Photoshop
EDIT : Here's the tutorial (http://dianae.deviantart.com/art/Digital-Painting-Tutorial-74468761), with all the links to the videos, my brushes, and some other nice stuff. I don't know if it can be useful, but I hope you'll like it! :)
Hello everybody!
Here's my new painting, I had promised a long time ago that I would write a tutorial on how to paint a portrait without using reference so here's the base image. I had started doodling something for the daily sketch forum capturing the process while painting (theme "pretty things") then I have decided to finish it and to make a tutorial out of it. I'm writing it, I think that I'll finish it during the weekend then I'll post it on my blog if some of you are interested in this technique.
I know that everything looks blurry except the face, it is just a base image for a tutorial ;) I may edit it later, although I really don't have time at the moment, maybe next year or at least after Christmas time.
I have enjoyed painting it a lot, I hope you'll like it too! It has been challenging because I wanted to make her look half Asian and half european, which is not as easy as I thought (I don't know if I have succeded in it, but I like her eyes and expression) and also because it is a very unusual color scheme for me. Her face is painted (she is some kind of a young Geisha) so her skin may look unusual.
I will make the videos available on youtube as soon as my computer has finished encoding them.
Oh, and Hanagumori means "late spring where blossom haze.
" (thanks a lot to *gohodoshi on Deviantart for the translation!!!)

Beautiful job, Dianae! And your animated WIP is a piece of art on it's own. I love the rythm it has!
You have the tiniest bit cartoony style there, so painting faces without any reference works well with you. I admire your for your work and for not being shy to share your technique. Beautiful work with the crisp golden lines on her clothing.
Hugs and kisses,
Henna

Thank you very much Daffydd, Kirsi, Eric and Laurent Antoine! :D Much appreciated!
By the way, I may fix the clothes later, I don't have time for now, but now that I'm a bit less tired, they don't look quite right to me.
Thanks again guys! :)

an impressive detailed character!
Man, you really do have serious talent, Diane. This is just bursting with character. Excellent work - I love the hair, the materials - and the eyes are just stunning. The amount work is really evident when you look at the full-res - the detail is incredible. This is turning into a bit of a gush so I'll stop now ;)

I love this, I saw it first on deviant where I have you spied on :-) However, I only just noticed this time around that her eyes are green and blue. When I looked at this earlier I was far too distracted by the structural beauty of her face to notice colours too much. It's a brilliant and striking image. I somehow wonder if it needs anything else? A slightly wider crop and insinuation of a background or a story in pose? This is me scraping the barrel for something constructive to say :-) lovely work.

Great work Dianae, I think the textures in the skin are really good, and the gold embelishment on the fish motif is very nice too.

Absolutely gorgeous. I live in Japan with my three half Japanese, half Caucasian kids and feel you've captured the look perfectly. Some of the clothing/jewelry details may be more Korean or Chinese than Japanese, but it doesn't matter. I give it 5 stars.

I love Japan and japanese culture. Geishas are a significant part of that culture. Really good painting from start till end with a nice workflow and critical corrections. I noticed a few modifications in the girl's head shape and those were the key. makes her look young and fragile. good job

Very striking image - I particularly like the unusual color scheme you're using, the contrast of the cool minty greens with that luscious red. Looking forward to checking out your tutorial!

Thank you very much RUDY87, ceruleanvii and Yorkey ! :)
The videos are still not ready (I have 10 hours of video to speed up and to cut, I am also going to add some music and explanation titles), I think that I'll make 10 videos for the steps of the tutorial... It is taking a bit longer than I thought, I also have a lot of school work to do and I'm working on big commissions, so I'm sorry for the delay.
Thanks a lot once again! :)

Beautiful portrait Dianae! I like how you did your own variation and still kept it instantly recognisable, which in a way is also very Japanese! The color variation of her eyes also manage to captivate me ... must remember that ...
