View Full Version : make realistic hair and beard in maya?
mxdirector 11-26-2007, 03:09 PM hello, i have jumped in to fur and hair, but never with much success. fur seems to work out alright, but sometimes appears in random places and hair never renders realisticly.
this is a fine example of hair.
the realistic shine and tones i the hair.
the beard and eyebrows are also impressive.
i want to know how this sort of thing is done.
any tutorials? any help? because the help files on maya really havnt helped me that much.

I'm not that best at rendering, but as far as I'm concerned I think it renders fine with maya software =)
When applying hair on a mesh, nothing is more crucial than UV-mapping. And instead of applying hair directly on the head, select the polygons where you want your fur to be and duplicate the faces so your applying fur to nothing but these selected faces and make the mesh not to render. Also for better results I go in and cut edges and move vertices around 'til I'm satisified with the placement of the fur(or anyway where it shall be).
Do the same for eyebrows and beard in this case. then simply apply fur to the selected geometry. And as you may see the fur points straight out which is not looking to good. Luckily nowadays Maya hair(the dynamics) can control the fur. so select your hair-mesh and attach hair to it. make the hair as long as the fur it's controlling. then coose hair-assign fur(or something like that. it's under the hair-tab) and play the simulation and the fur is moving down with the hair curves. Oh, right, you have to assign the head-mesh as collision object for the hair. If you need some more indepth walkthrough if you have problem finding, just reply!
And when you've come this far. it's mostly tweaking painting color, baldness and lengthmap etc. which you assign to the fur attributes in the attribute editor.

Does anyone know how to include fur into an occulsion render layer in Maya 8.5?
I am rendering a fairly hairy spider and would like it to look a bit more real! Do you know of any good resources that can help?
Thanks, ALOT!
