Thank you guys! I had a lot of fun doing this piece of work and I’m happy you enjoyed it too .
Neox3d, - As for the vegetation I usually use several planes with alpha to form different “patches” of vegetation and then distributing them over the scene. I've made a simple scheme ,hope it’ll be useful:

The sky is so beautiful ! I loved that orange tone.
All the architectural style, the conceptual vehicles (da Vinci Style), all look so good and harmonious, it looks like a well done oil painting somehow.
It is wonderful ! a 5 star masterpiece !
Did you make a sky matte painting? Or it is all hand painted ?
Can you share a bit of your lightning too ?
Thanks and best wishes,

I really like this, it looks so much like an illustration, when I saw it on the frontpage I was sure I'd be linked to the 2D gallary.
I think its wonderful when people get a CG scene to look hand painted.

One more time - thank you all for the kind words ;)
As for the sky – it ‘s mainly hand painted stuff as I used some photos for reference and to gain additional detail ( by combining some overlay ,soft / hard light layers etc. ) Te textures are all hand painted as once again additional detail / noise added by combining with some photo images .
And here are some wires as well :

Ognian,
I love your piece! The homage you made to steampunk fantasy authors (i.e. Philip Pullman, Neil Gaiman) is prevalent in the models you chose. The brief shock of symmetry is a nice touch. You certainly attest to the reputation of your studio.
Keep on,

Hi !
Very wonderful image !
Great work...
I've seen the picture pretty much everyday since you posted and somehow I didn't read its description (jumped straight away to fullres version). I though it's 100% 2D untill now... amazing!
thanks for sharing with us WIPs, especially the vegetation one, really helpfull. I'd really appreciate if you shown some textures in decent resolution. It always makes me wonder how much hand-draw textures have to look in order to get that result in final render.
IMO th best render of this kind I've seen for looooong time, obviously 5 stars.
Bravado
12-01-2007, 08:10 AM
When I first saw it, I actually thought it was a drawing. It's hard to believe it's 3D.
With that said, it's absolutely amazing. Because you used Max, I suppose you used Ink 'n' Paint a lot? Otherwise, it would be hard to achieve the same effect.
But still, so many details and variations in this render, it's hard to even comment on it. The lighting is great. But really, I'd love to hear about how you achieved this quality and drawing similarity. Keep up the good work, man.

While I admire the technical excellence of the 3D work, from an image point of view, esthetically, it's too busy. What is the focal point? What are you trying to say or show with this image?
Examine your image as a work of art instead of a 3D rendering.
Some contrast between the various components of the image would help define the focus.
But overall, a nice work.
