hi all,

I'm pretty new to XSI and I was wondering if XSI has something similar to afterburn for max?

Look in the netview. There are lots if fire/smoke/explosion presets in there.

Unfortunately, although you can get something nice with XSI's particles, it doesn't cut it as Afterburn. There is nothing like Afterburn for XSI.

..i was wondering.. how can i make effects like the car headlights.. and when the camera moves .. the headlights kinda leaves a trail .... not sure how to explain this... like when ur holding a firework... and when you wave around really fast.. you could 'draw' something out.. how'd i do that in xsi?.

Hiya.

Not sure, but it sounds like a job for particles to me. I don't think there is a "real world lens and film effects" setting anywhere. :)

light trails..
either with a heavily motion blurred object with some post added (for high saturation and contrast) or straight away in post.

also particles could do the trick but it very much sounds like an overkill to me, especially considering all the setting up it would take.

no straight forward way to do it anyway, no pre-made shader or something.
Go post, that's how that kind of effects is best done without killer rendering times overheads (and being an aberration anyway it's always in foreground, compositing it won't be a problem).
