It could be that your UI setting got jacked up somehow. Load the Default UI or one of the custom ones like the Reactor one to see if it fixes the problem. It could also be that your video setting is causing this, try switching to OpenGL if that doesn't work try Direct X.
Last but not least, try updating your video card drivers.
Good luck

Run 3dsmax.exe -h to change the viewport render mode. You might be having driver problems. Start by setting it to software ZBuffer and go from there.

Sound like you Videocard can't use the hardware accelleration...
Are you by any chance running Lightwave at the same time you are running Max? (Or started up Max when shutting down Lightwave)

If it happens when you close lightwave, it means that the OpenGL or DirectX device hasn't been released yet. This way you get black viewports, because two different applications can't use
DirectX or OpenGL at the same time (may be depending on your video card). :annoyed:
There is now way to fix this though (for as far as I know). Maybe it's a small bug in Lightwave???
Some video cards have this problem also, if you are not using 32 bpp on your desktop (but 16 for instance). This problem happened a lot with my old Geforce 2 card. So try switching the bpp of your desktop to 32. :hmm:
