Title: Llanowar Reborn
Name: Philip Straub
Country: USA
Software: Painter, Photoshop

One of the Magic The Gathering cards I painted about a year ago. I swear I repainted this thing about 6 times until I got the look I was going for. The image depicts a dead forest that has been reborn (thus the old stumps sprouting new trees) I think I made about 100 foliage custom brushes in Photoshop and a bunch of nozzles in Painter to achieve the effect.

This image is also available from my print dealer, The Gilded Griffin. The run is limited 150 hand proofed, signed and numbered by me. If you're a magic collector check them out they're selling through pretty fast.

I hope you like:)

Thank you:)

I'm actually working on timing for the next workshop right now. It's always tough to balance out my freelance and fulltime gig but, it's looking like early 2008. I'll be adding video tutorials in addition to the text and assignments- which is a 150 page book unto itself:)

whoa momma! the details, the light, the concept are all fantastic. looks like a photograph with one of those old, big-ass camera's that capture all the information. really jaw-dropping. remindes me of Kong's island.

I love the details and the mood but I hope I won´t get killed when I say something negative about your artwork (I admire you and your skills and I´m a big fan of your artworks! "Where fears roam" for example is my favorite artwork of all times.)

So what I don´t really like is the composition - I know you as a master of composition. This artwork doesn´t seem to be one of the best examples of a balanced composition for me and my eyes do not find a place to rest in this picture, there doesn´t seem to be a real "center". Furthermore I´m missing a bit of contrast (e.g. colour contrasts) - all in all a quite "uninteresting" painting in my eyes.

Great work form you again Phillip. Nice to see quite an understated piece (in terms of subject matter) get some well deserved attention. The treatment of the vegetation and trees is very well handled - I know how tricky that can be having had a go myself recently. The understanding of lighting and colour really nails this piece. Great stuff!

Very captivating and calming! I can smell the greenery, the freshness of the leaves and the quiet power of an ancient tree... drat, I look around and I'm still in my cramped up little place.

I'm off to sprinkle some stars. Congrats on the front page!
