Just curious, how many pages is the ebook?
It's a great deal though it would be cool if they offered the ebook separately for those of us who already own all the other stuff in the deal.

Cool... love the characters. Couple of questions:
- How long is the sale price going to be available?
- Can we see some videos of the rig features in the toon animals?
- The site says it's a 3 dvd set... but I see two Leon dvds (sculpting and digital) and the new toon e-book (if you click on "DVD3 The art of 3d toon", the e-book comes up)... so there's no video on the third dvd?
Thanks,
~Mechis

I think its 300+ pages. I need to check when I get home.
@Mechis: Yes the book has no videos like in leon. It comes with the book and all the character\scene files.

Thanks for the post about this product. I will be ordering it next week.
About comments about the cost, this is extremely great price especially considering the scene files, etc. If you look at some of the Autodesk Maya manuals this price is extremely generous.
Although video tutorials would be nice, what there is appears to be great.
I already have the Making of Leon and enjoy it and use it. I guess I will get a second copy with the Character set.

Don't you think a comment like that is disrespecting all their knowledge and hard work? Perhaps instead of accusing them of backstabbing, you might just politely email them and explain that you already own Leon and want to just buy the ebook. Or do like Nate and entice them with his ample charm and charisma. :D
I'd buy that for a dollar!:scream: No really, this looks like a good buy, will definitely look into getting a copy for my Library and reference.

my comment wasn't mean for respect. couldn't you tell? why do I have to ask them anything? if they had the courtesy to think about there current customers, they would have offered a separate option to buy the toon kit alone. but they dont. i just went to the site before my first post to confirm. why do i have to charm them? are you kidding me? you must be joking. I spent my hard earned money for the first time around with the making a leon kit. you obviously didnt buy it so you dont understand. i bet you bit torrented hence your non-understanding of the issue.

Well for $49.00, I think that is well worth an ebook on cartoon rigging and the Maya scene files.
And if you already have the Leon set and dont want it, then don't buy it. Pretty sad when people gotta come on here and bash someones hard work and then get all defensive when someone else sticks up for them.
This is the reason I dont usually respond and I close out my cgtalk window because I get tired of hearing people think the world revolves around them....

im not bashing there hard work. i think they skill is amazing and thats why i buy there products. I just dont like there marketing. not to mention i paid 80+ dollars for leon, now you can get leon AND toon for $49. and leon owners get no discount. wow, im surprised how you dont understand at all. and where on earth do you get the idea the earth evolves around me? this is group discussion. and i have every right to respond to other posts wether there defensive or not. you express self centeredness more then i do bashing on me responding BUDDY! keep closing your cgtalk window if you want so the earth can continue evolving around you. again, i like there products and hard work, just not there marketing. its like apple products, i enjoy there products, but boy oh boy there marketing can be bothersome sometimes.

Hey Orbital, I read thru this thread and I just wanna say that your first post jumped out as unnecessarily angry as if CGToollkit had done something bad to you... I understand what you're saying but the language you chose paints you out as if you've got some sense of entitlement. I own Art of Rigging series and Leon etc too so I understand your situation.
It's about perception me thinks, like I think that the attachment of previous releases to this great new one gives it more appeal, not to me personally but to the greater market. When I read the offer I saw bonuses not backstabs.
I might be biased tho... CGToolkit saved my life once :P
Seriously, it's just an ebook with some great old releases attached to it to enhance its appeal, and, it's only 50 tax deductable bucks dude... they're getting my money again:wise:

Hi Daxx,
Just wondering if you could give a quick rundown of the cartoony rigs. What are they capapble/not capable of. Ik/FK arms, legs, spine? Ik/FK matching? Brief rundown of the facial setup. You know, stuff like that. Just to stoke the fire a bit! :D
Looks very awesome, and will most likely purchase.
Thanks

Yeah, would love to hear a bit more about the rigs while I wait for it to arrive. I also own Leon and Art of Rigging so I know this is gonna be good. $49 is a screaming price even if I am getting doubles of the older stuff, small price to pay and like DMack says, a worthy write off.
BTW, who built the models? They really nailed Jasen's fantastic concepts. Speaking of which, here's a nice interview (http://jasen-strong-interview.blogspot.com/) with him.
Hello adFont and MyFault,
the rigs that I've done and described for this book are similar to my frog rig shown in my 2005 showreel but with some substancial change:
http://www.davidelasala.com/index.php?option=com_content&task=blogsection&id=7&Itemid=39
- all the limbs/tails are IK/FK/Elastic mode, the elastic mode is a particular rig described in the book.
- face rig is based on joints binded with a particular spatial rig and wrapped with a special Face Gui
- there are also tips and tricks about, deformations, control shapes, movable pivot, and the "magic" deform shield :)
Yep the book is about 300+ pages and my rigging section is 150+ pages :)

But I am on a Mac. I wrote them about this.
This is a great deal but they don't offer a Mac version of TK Muscle. They continue to put out new product and resell old ones but not update them to their customers.
Just want to know why is it so difficult for script writers doing such great work to port to another OS in the same app?

Wow, $49 is cheap enough to guilt someone to buy it for me for a Christmas gift. Does anyone know if the Muscle TK plugin is backwards compatible with with Maya Complete 7.0?
Also, are the tutorials compatible with Maya Complete or is Unlimited required? I ask because I was surprisingly dissappointed when I discovered that they used Unlimited's hair to create their stretchy rigs in Maya Techniques SuperToon Rigging DVD.

I do have to agree with Alberto, it seems the appeal of the characters goes down a notch once translated into 3D. I think the one that translates the best is the really cool owl, I would like to see one of these characters in a nice animation peice to see if they really work well in the medium.
Looks like an amazing deal though, the knowledge that you would gain from modelling rigging, texturing seems like it would be a truck load!

Their scripts uses hair dynamics. Also, there was a problem with their scripts not being update for Maya v8. However there's was a post here that someone showed how to fix it.
I that this problem because I bought the first book. They then updated the script in the second book.

1. Does the course study utilize softbody dynamic for flappy ears or wings.
2. Is there feathering type rigging for the wing spans.
3. is this just stretchy rigs.
4. Is faster shipment available? Took over a week last time.

LOL.... good thing I kept reading. I thought the concept art was toon shaded 3D models and was like "Wow... those are awesome! Gotta get this book."
While I'm sure the book is great for rigging and such I don't know why they are called toons (a word often associated with 2D animated illustrations). Just because they have stylized forms doesn't make them toons does it?

Its called the art of 3d Toons
Toons is toons, the word has well over 50 years of association with 2d cel animation. Affixing "3d" to the front is like strapping a 12" black rubber dildo with knobbly bits on to it. An abomination.
I like "stylised 3d."

Daxx, said the ebook was over 300 pages and 150 pages were of his rigging. The pdf i got on the cd is only 183 pages of which about 50 have to do with rigging. They show the modeling of 4 or 5 characters and the rigging of only 1. If Daxx did 150 pages of rigging, which i assume is the rigging of characters that were modeled, then why didn't we recieve that information.
Daxx, would love to hear from you on this. The entire rigging part is just the rigging of Gaston. Would have liked to see how you did the wings and elephant trunk, etc.

no the book is 365 pages, on the PDF you are seeing spreads ( makes it easier to read ) like you do on the sneak peak pdf

progerik: i can agree with that....each page is wide so it counts as two, but it still doesn't add up to the 150+ pages on rigging that Daxx mentioned.
it is great to have the scene files to all the rigs! my only issue is, that out of all the characters that are modeled, the most biped-like one is the one that the rigging goes over. it would have been nice to see how the other rigs were handled too. the bird, the owl, the elephant....there you have wings, quadruped, a trunk, etc. if the ebook takes the time to show you how to model all of those, i'm sure i'm not the only one to assume that it would have shown how to rig all of them too.

In no way does having the page like this make it easier to read. Perhaps if you have a widescreen monitor, so the page opens and fills up all the screen it does, but on a regular aspect ratio it does not work out so well.
Hello guys,
I didn't received my copy yet but I'm pretty sure that they didn't changed so much 'cause when I receive the "wip" version that was about 300+ pages and my rigging part was 150+.
The rigs of the elephant trunk, tails, ears and wings are described into the book using Gaston character as a reference, all the rig modules are based on the same system.

My order will be a while yet so I don't know how a non-winged creature will be used as an example for a wing creature. My hope was that the there would be DVD that showed samples of wings, and more so soft body rigging for what have your for stretchy bat wings.
I could see a bat wing being use for dragon wings.
I asked in this forum about this but I didn't receive an answer and mailings are so long but I figured I would find out sooner.
I have bought other CGTool products. They have great DVDs. I'm suprised that this book spends so much time on just box modeling. I guess this is more about Art/Design and interepreting that design into 3D characters as oppose to rigging 8 eyed, 8 legged, winged creatures.

my honest opinion about the toon rigs they give away, they aren't finished.....the skinning just isn't polished. also the rhino model/rig isn't on the dvd. with everything you get for 49$ it's a steal! i just feel they should have spent some more time on the rigs before giving them away.

Yeah I agree. I still think it was a deal because I didn't previously own the Leon stuff, so it worked out for me. But if I already had the Leon stuff, I would be really disappointed.
The PDF is ok. There's a lot of information in there, but the pictures depicting the modeling stuff were pretty small and sometimes hard to make out. I also found the rigs to be disappointing. There's quite a bit of issues with the skinning/weighing.. lot's of unwanted pulling and stuff. The only rig I've been able to use with any luck has been Gary the Elephant. That's a really good rig, btw. But some of the others have had problems. The Gaston rig.. if you pull his arms down to get a neutral pose, there's a weird inward bugle that happens under the armpits. If you take the head or should controls and rotate him from side to side, there's all sorts of odd weighing problems along the rotations. So I agree.. everything feels rushed and not finished. I was looking forward to the whole package.. a good demonstration on modeling rigging and skinning, as well as some new rigs to use. So for the money it ended up still being a decent enough deal, but I'm bummed that the part I was really looking forward to wasn't as strong as I expected.

Has anyone tried using this eBook on an eBook reader like the ones from Sony or Amazon?
After reading through the book on a computer display it feels like my eye balls are burning. It'd be nice if the PDF formatting works with an eBook reader or some other solution.

Duh, I should have saw that one coming. Basically, TKMuscle and Leon just got their walking papers, and they are try to cut loses or cash in.
Still, a DVD for the toon rigging would have been good. Not much for reading when most titles have video training.

If you haven't received any updates on an order you should definitely email salesdesk@cgtoolkit.net to see what the status is.
Never had any problems with previous orders from CG Toolkit, good luck with figuring out what's going on!

I placed an order when this post was first made, quite a number of weeks ago i believe. I've yet to receive anything in the post, i've contacted them but have had no response.
So yeh, sadly i agree, this is all beginning to get a little pear shaped, is anyone directly in touch with the guys at cgtoolkit? What's going on?

I did get mine a couple of days ago. Really haven't looked at it much. I did see the section on traditional clay. It's good to know I guess, but TKMucles doesn't work on a Mac. Some the other scripts are fine.

Morning everyone and Merry Christmas!
Received my copy yesterday and my fiance also bought me a copy as a gift! D'oh!
I've only had a quick flip through but I am a little underwhelmed, especially in comparison to the amazing Art Of Rigging books. As it has been mentioned, the PDF is mainly about modelling, uv and texturing with the rigging section only about 60 pages long covering much of the same stuff as Art Of Rigging. For the price however you cant go wrong, but would of prefered a little more on character set up, especially in toon specific areas like bendy joints for example.
I have a spare copy in the UK so if anyone wants to buy it from me, PM me!
