How do you delete edges without leaving a gap?

When i hit the "delete" button it deletes it, but it leaves a huge gap.

When i hit the "Backspace" button it deletes an edge sometimes, but only when it thinks the edge isn't useful i guess...

First off, I'm going to assume that you are either using Max 5, or max 4 with Meshtools, and, that you are using an editable poly, not an editable mesh. If not, change over to an EP, and you can get the scripts here:

Assuming the above, instead of deleting the edge, select the "remove" function from your quad menu, or from the EP panel.

That should do the trick.
