View Full Version : EXPOSÉ Categories and Awards Announced!
Leonard 04-16-2003, 12:04 PM Hello,
On behalf of the EXPOSÉ Advisory Committee, we're pleased to announce the categories and awards for EXPOSÉ.
All official information can be found here:

EXPOSÉ AWARDS
In addition to showcasing the world’s best digital art, the EXPOSÉ AWARDS will honor the best artists in a diverse range of categories and styles.
The EXPOSÉ AWARDS celebrate the highest artistic achievement in a diverse range of categories and styles. The award recipients will demonstrate the astounding fusion of artistic and technical excellence that the explosion of digital tools opens up to the modern artist.
In each category EXPOSÉ will honor both 3D and 2D (illustration) entries separately.
Master (gold) and Excellence (silver) awards will be given in the following categories:
Character in Repose
Recognizes the greatest talent in bringing a character to life. This is independent of style or of the organic or mechanical nature of the character. The defining criterion is the ability the artist demonstrates in bringing the subject to life. This encompasses technical skill, believability, composition and, perhaps most of all, emotion.
Character in Action
Honors the highest achievement in capturing a character in action. This category celebrates the artist that best captures the sheer power, energy and elegance of a character in motion. Although many digital artists aspire to create animations that come to life, it is a rare talent to capture expressive motion frozen in a moment in time.
Mechanical
Celebrates the best device or part of a device. This category is highly dependant on the artist’s ability to demonstrate an excellence in technical design and execution. This includes both the intricacy of subject design and the technical excellence of modeling/texturing/lighting/illustration.
Architectural
Awards the best architectural visualization. This is independent of style or setting. The defining criterion here is the artist’s ability to create an image that is not just believable but is inspirational, and in particular, evokes a desire to visit the location/building/space.
Environment
Recognizes the best set or location. This could be indoors, outdoors, underwater, in space – wherever. Here the artist’s ability to evoke a sense of wonder and a wish to see more is paramount. This category demands a combination of artistic interpretation, detail, and lighting to create a believable and enticing (or evocative) environment.
Visual Effect
Honoring the most spectacular visual effects. This diverse and challenging category celebrates the combination of artistic interpretation with sheer technical excellence. The subject matter may be anything from flowing water, to sand storms, to a star field or perhaps a spectacular atmospheric or lighting effect.
Transport
Awards the best device for moving about in. Whether chrome space ship, or classical Venetian gondola, machine of war, exotic vehicle or animal to be ridden, this category seeks out the best images of transportation. The defining quality sought after here is the artist’s ability to capture and evoke the desire to travel to a place, or by a mode of transport or to travel in a particular way.
Grand Master recognition may also be given for any category if there is an outstanding entry that warrants this highest level of recognition. The editors and jury may also bestow Grand Master awards for artists that have demonstrated an outstanding skill and contribution to the advancement of digital art in any area or style.
All entry information for EXPOSÉ can be found here:

For me, this book is probably going to be one of the most exciting and inspirational products I will buy when it comes to Digital Art. It will help me to improve, not technically but emotionally. I will defiantly be purchasing this book whenever it will be possible to purchase it.

I'm glad to see that another 3d art book is being assembled. :)
Do you have any idea how many pages the book will be or is it still dependent on the number of quality entries?
Also, I read--"publication.. for July 2003..." Wow! That's pretty fast, given that you would have just recieved entries in June. This Expose book is shooting for excellence on all levels!
-Best of Luck! :)

OK... everyone seems to want to know where they will be able to purchase EXPOSÉ when it ships. Here are our plans:
1. We will be shipping directly to all over the world and you will be able to order it directly from us.
2. After the initial orders are filled we will make EXPOSÉ available through as many outlets as possible.
3. Bulk discounts will be available to anyone -- so we will be encouraging people to get together and send in multiple orders and act as local "distributors".
4. We will be asking you all if you know of any, or are yourself, established regional shipping distributors.
5. In a few weeks we will be putting up a "reserve your copy" page on-line. This will determine the size of the initial print run.
6. The week before shipping the books we will put up the actual order page and ask people who reserved a copy to complete their transactions at that time. This site will then become the permenant on-line shop front.
7. For collectors we are working on a very special numbered limited edition also -- but we dot want to give away any more on that for now ;)
In principal we want to ship as many copies directly first before putting EXPOSÉ out through other distributors. This will ensure all initial orders get filled quickly and will maximise the money we have to put back into more books and the forum.
In addition to more editions of EXPOSÉ there is a whole range of other books and periodicals that we are planing on doing... but right now all efforts are going into EXPOSÉ. We are going to make this the best quality and most exciting book for this industry, and then do it again and again :)
cheers

Wow. Totally r0xx0rs. I think that just peaked my interest enough to open up 3dsMax 5 again....:airguitar
I'm not really expecting (severely doubting) to get in, but perhaps (yeah right) next year.
And we are all jealous of Stahlberg. I really can't wait for this to be available. I'll definitely purchase it. And drool all over it.

as07, These have been answered if you read the instructions.
1. No
2. No. But you stand a darn good chance because the Jury are CGTalk mods who post stuff to the gallery.

True, but I am aware of the costs of other such publications. Like I said silly question, for all sorts of logistical reasons which I am sure you're aware of, but I just thought I'd ask. Are there any specs yet on which publisher you'll be working with (if any) and who will be doing to distribution or sponsorship for that matter? Or is it still completely in the preliminary stages working the numbers, or post pitch stage?
Leonard
04-19-2003, 08:47 PM
Yes, we have a publisher - no pitching necessary.

Would there be any censorship issues? For example if I submit a cg image that contains partial nudity, would that be considered inappropriate for publication?
Leonard

The jury will decide.

This may have been already covered and I just missed it. But I was wondering if the book will have more then just page after page of full colour final images (not that their is anything wrong with that).
But I was hoping that for example say maybe some of the 3D artworks would have a full final render and then a wireframe or two and then some words from its creator on how it was done, what software, etc. That way people get some insight as well as a "pretty" picture :)
PS, Leonard, Tito said on the recent 3d Buzz radio show that you are in Adelaide, is that true?
MarkSnoswell
04-26-2003, 04:33 AM
Both Leonard and I are in Adelaide.
We will be printing a little information on each image -- as well as the software used we have requested a short description of the image in the artists words.
For all of you going to the 3D Festical in Copenhagen in just under two weeks -- we have a very special something for you :) ... but I wont spoil the suprise just yet ;)
tonygib
04-26-2003, 06:55 AM
Hay Mark, cool, yeah I knew you are here in Adelaide, just didn't know Leonard was, guess that's three of us now and here I always thought that there was nothing much in little old SA :)
Ok, so thats cool, but no "selected" wireframes, etc then, maybe in a "cheaper" addon book, say black and white (do you really need colour wireframes?). Just a thought.
I so wish I was going to 3D Festival and Siggraph for that matter, must do it someday.

Steven Stahlberg is also from Adelaide originally.
Wireframes: They look crappy in print and we are tight on space just to show all the excellent art being entered -- keep those entries comming in everyone!
We may look at ways to supliment the book on the web -- so published artists can say more about their work and put up wireframes. That's not decided yet - but it sounds like a good idea.
EXPOSE is just the start to ... we have lots more planned that I am sure you will all like :)
tonygib
04-26-2003, 08:35 AM
Yeah, I caught that from his 3D Buzz radio interview too, though I didn't think he was born in Adelaide, was either Sydney or Melbourne and he left and at some point came back to Australia (Adelaide) for a period of time.
Yes I guess fine lines in print don't show up that well, and even while I was reading that line I was thinking a web site or included CD/DVD which could even have some of the videos/animations. But this maybe all too much for the first one, second one maybe.

I read about the image format and requirement, but don't see any information about the DPI that we should be using, I figured since its for printing you guys might be a bit more specific such as asking for things like 200 or 300 DPI instead of the default 72 DPI for most images created. Not to mention the file sizes make a big difference when FTP them.
And also the the suggested image size is more like a standard portrait format, I have one that is 3200(width) x 2100(height) so is more of a landscape layout, and I cannot resize it to the portrait vertical format without losing half of its information.
Anyway the book seems to be a good idea and looking forward to see it
Leonard
04-26-2003, 07:42 PM
Actually we did. Our initial call for entries had the exact specifications - literally NO-ONE entered because they thought the entry requirements were ridiculously high. Now we just ask for as large renders as people can possibly handle, and we'll do the rest - whether or not that requires resampling or not.
As mentioned in the requirements, we just ask that you send in renders as large as possible so that we can do the post processing - you should NOT downsize them. The requirements are set up as a guideline and should not be an inhibiting factor to people entering.
For God's sake man - just send in the images!

well then...
i included 2 images (showing the same thing) one for a preview at 800x600 and one at 4096x4096...now..i do belive the smaller one does look better (just caz it was more of a close up)
Should i just try to get the same angle as the small one i di before and "re-enter" or just leave it as is and u guys can do whatev you want.."assuming" you will be publishing it.:surprised

Hi everyone, i love this idea btw  ...Do you guys know how many pages the book will be and the size? Hardcover? Just curious...are you only accepting 2 entries from each category?(Gold and Silver) That's the idea I got from your first post, are you possibly going to show more people's images-just not with awards for "Gold" and "Silver"? Just curious what kind of book to expect because I saw somebody in here called it a magazine--is it going to be a magazine or a book? Man I ask too many questions-can someone just shoot me?:D

EXPOSÉ will be the highest quality art book. It will have 150 - 190 pages of art works -- this will represent something like 300 images from 200+ artists.
These images will include all the EXPOSÉ AWARDS winners and all Call for Entries images.
The main eddition of EXPOSÉ will be softcover.
There will be a very special, limited and numbered, hard back eddition for collectors. We have not decided what number of these to print yet -- but it will be strictly limited as a numbered collectable eddition.
Images that dont get in issue 1 of EXPOSÉ will be rolled over for consideration for issue 2.
The book will be great!!!!, Ill have to save some money for it :applause: :applause:

Is the book for only film and high res modeling and artwork or will the book have a game art section? Im sure there is lots of low poly game art that people would submit. Are you going to have anything like this in Expose?

I have a question please. But first I would like to mention that I think it is a great idea, also great for all concerned.
My question is: I have work I have just finished, but due to the NDA I have I cannot show it until Mid-June.But with the book only coming in July It would be OK for me to have it in the book if accepted. But not to show it anywhere else until Mid -June. So If I turn in my art to you and it is accepted can I count on it not being shown here at CGtalk until at least mid-June?I would than show it at Cgtalk in Mid-June but not until then.
Thanks for any help and advice ahead of time.
P.S.: Do you also accept lone head models fully textured? And how about finished models without textures (WIP'S)?
Thanks again.

i dont think they'll show ANY art till the book is released and the ones that werent picked will be shown then as well as the ones admitted...so i think you'd be okay with that
as for WIPs...they said they'll show the best in the world...so that practically says it all...hehe:eek:

Actually, we will show some artwork prior to release. It's just that right now, everyone is tied up with 3D Festival which is happening this week.
Here are preview PDF's of the Collector's Cards that are being given EXCLUSIVELY at 3D Festival to conference delegates. These are printed on full gloss hard stock and they look fantastic.
