You should draw the joints/bones with a bend in the joint, in order to give the IK some idea which way to bend.

Its not wrong. You simply havent indicated to lightwave which was the leg is supposed to bend. You do that by either drawing the skelegon bent as CIM mentioned, by prebending the bone before adding IK or turning on constraints and adjusting them until the leg doesnt bend that way.

You may want to create your skeleton with skeligons in modeler so that you can easily change the orientation of your bones before you go into layout. It makes life a littlie easier

I would recommend a very good and low priced plugin called Orthopedics for Lightwave at www.irrationalnumber.com
It brings the same features you have with skelegons (and more) into layout. This allows you do draw your bones in layout and adjust them there even if you have motions on the bones.
