It will relate with building GIANT Statues from the past present or future...
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_statues_by_height#Disappeared (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_statues_by_height#Disappeared)
For example you might build the Christ the Redeemer (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Christ_the_Redeemer_%28statue%29), stature (image (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Image:CorcovadofotoRJ.jpg))from Brazil
OR the Colossus of Rhodes (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Colossus_of_Rhodes) from the past..
Here is a kick ass example from Russia:
The The Motherland Calls statue commemorating the Battle of Stalingrad (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Battle_of_Stalingrad).

we will need to do a statue that alreeady exist or we can create a concept?
RobertoOrtiz

I will allow fantasy entries...From either established cannon or something the artists makes up.
For example you may do the Argonath statures from the Lord of the Rings saga image (http://www.flickr.com/photos/m3lbatoast/18989002/)
or you might create your own.

Is that allowed to do a statue of an animal ? Or in other way, are we supposed to do a human statue ? I have in mind ideas like Horus statue which is a mix between human and animal, or an anthropomorphical beast/animal (hum like Denver ? xD)
And when can I start my model ? ^^

Please Roberto leave this open to animal/human, hybrid, alien... you will get really cool results
I think the most important thing is to get the feel of scale, either with a juxtapose in a enviro built around or with a scene, I guess that’s pretty much the same thing... Perhaps a story or tale in the final render, like jason fighting the matal giant, or lord of the rings elephants being attacked
I would say a great reference for creating atmospheric scale is the wonderful and beautiful game Shadow of the Colossus.... oh I love that game

I don't see the point in this. What difference does it make what size the statue is. You can't tell the scale in a render anyway, unless it's surrounded by other objects, but that's a totally arbitrary distinction.
Any model could be scaled up or down to any size, and therefore, the size is irrelevant.
The only difference would be in texturing - you'd have to make the dirt maps smaller scale to make the statue look bigger.
The main difference with huge statues in the real world is the lack of detail or quality compared to smaller ones, but that's hardly a quality to aim for in our work.

I'm with Oddity on this one. To add, this seems too general a challenge and is leaning directly towards the huge debate of "do what you want to do", but just make it look like a statue. You can make any model look like a statue, it's a model. If all I have to do is come up with a bogus story and a bump map plaque to say it's a statue, that doesn't really focus on anything at all. To make this look like a real statue, you'd seriously have to focus on your final render and presentation, which again deviates from any modeling challenge. I've sat out the last couple of challenges being tied up with other things. I came back in hopes of finding a great challenge to take on after the last two amazing results. I must say I'm slightly disappointed. This idea either needs strict rules to focus on a particular statue or set of statues, or another challenge all together.

Ok guys, Ill take your cooments into consideration.
Keep in mind that the core of what I am trying to do is a Master copy
challenge.

The problem is that there aren't many huge statues in the world, and those that do exist aren't very good compared to how many really masterful normal sized ones there are.
I don't understand what the idea of making them 'colossal scale' is adding to the challenge.
I though for the next challenge you were thinking of a topic like 'masters of the louvre'. I remember you posting that somewhere.

The louvre idea caught my eye as well and would be far more interesting.

I've thought about it some more. I apologize for being kind of brash, I was just hoping for more umph in this upcoming challenge. Doing any modeling would be great, and placing it in a scene to create the scale would be somewhat challenging. I'll go ahead and sign in on this one.

For something new something new at all... Why not to make a contest with this same guidelines where teams joining different 3D artists would be accepted?
A modeler would model and texture it up and a vfx or light guy would lit and compose it keeping in mind the achievement of the colossal scale. Single entries would be accpeted as well, though they were judge appart. Best team entry and best solo entry.. something like that...

How about keeping the colossus idea but focusing it on something like the Shadow of the Colossus game idea? You know, structures, stone, rocks coming to life in some sort of humanoid/animal form.
Here's a link (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shadow_of_the_colossus) to what I'm talking about in case you don't know this game.

Sorry in advance guys, I mean this as joke:

When I read giant statue that was the first thing that came to my mind. Of course there wouldn't be any hardcore modeling with that statue.

Hehe, thats great. Reminds me of this giant Paul Bunyan statue someone built around New Orleans.

Hey Roberto quick question =) I was thinking of doing a statue from one of the sword of truth books... specifically this one:
http://www.geocities.com/Area51/1025/faith3.gif
In the book it's described as being a lot bigger (or at least from what I remember), but the painting shows it a bit smaller. I'm not sure if this fits the colossus criteria. In the book, it was set on display in a sort of huge hall for worship, so I was thinking of using the enviroment for scale reference and making the statue appear colossal. Would this be okay?

Hi All,
I would like to know something before I start to think about my challenge entry.
Is it possible to create a colossus carved out from a mountain, similar to Mt Rushmore four head statue ? Or should it be a single standing statue totally free of landscape ?

That sounds just fine.
We have on the reference list the cool Crazy Horse monument being sculpted right now in South Dakota.

Roberto,
There's a cool statue out in Virginia Beach of Neptune. There's plenty of reference material
but it doesn't fit the requirement of being 60 something ft. tall. Mind if I do it anyway?
This will be the first time I ever enter a modeling challenge. But I do have a background
in Max, Maya and ZBrush so I'm not a total noob. So I got dibs on Neptune cool? ;)
