I was wondering if anyone had some good settings for realistic looking eye whites?

You know the ones I mean, those nice, realistic ones that you see from time to time in some of the better looking renders posted in these forums, I can't seem to shake the washed out white look.

If you posted an image of what your own surface currently looks like, it would be easier to help you to fix it :)
That's the best way to learn something, in my opinion - to actually take advice and implement it. Just taking someones preset and applying it to your model doesn't really teach you why it works like that, which means that you will always struggle with creating that type of surface :)

Settings????

Actually I would go for a UV map.
There was a Maya site that had some excellent maps,I mean he painted these but they are very realistic.
Then from there you can spec and diffuse map it to get some very awesome effects.

Here ya go,check with him about commercial use but he is a very talented artist.Good luck! (http://www.cg-art.i12.com/downloads.html)

Remember also that a lot of the trick to getting realistic eyes actually lies in the modelling part too :)

Here is an excellent tutorial on making totally kickass eyeballs by Bill Fleming (http://www.computerarts.co.uk/tutorials/type/tutorial.asp?id=23082) :D:D

This should get you where you want to be

This is probably the best eyeball tutorial I have ever seen on the net.

Thats a great one Leigh, thats from way back,an oldie but a goodie.

He used to do a lot of 3DWorld tutorials when that magazine first hit the racks.
Good stuff.

Okay, here is what it currently looks like, it's a WIP so not everything sits as it should atm, but it's getting there slowly. As you can see the whites don't do it for me, looks like a flippin poser render, currently they have uv maps but I don't know, it's just too 'flat', too dry looking. My hope was someone had some tips on how to achieve that 'wet' soft look you see by guys like theripper over on the Lightwave forum, wasn't looking for a preset particularly, just some pointers for the right direction.

BTW yes I know the character has sloppy blue hair, it's temporary, it will of course be sasquatch blue with finished!:)

Oh, you should start off by adding more gloss and reflection ;)
Also, perhaps painting some very faint pink vein detail into the eyeballs woudn't hurt either :)

At any rate, check out that tutorial I posted a link too - you should get some pointers there :)

Thanks Leigh, will play around with the settings, darken the eye white maps a bit as well, they did have faint lines but I think the lighting isn't too favourable to them, so will have to try and bring them out a bit more.

Oh, well back to it I guess;)

I have a problem with the eyes too, we I turn around, you van look THROUGH the eyeball and you see the 'nothing' inside the head

can anyone post a wireframe of good eyes in the head?

An eye is wet which means one thing. Reflectivity. That is the key to almost all surfaces.

Specularity imo is bad. Sorry Leigh:)

Oh and you could add some luminosity too but only using a map or gradient as it must be subtle.
