View Full Version : Object - Gatling Gun (no texture)
mlabrams 04-15-2003, 11:31 PM ok well its done lol, its the most detail ive put into anything, its to many polys to be messing with it anymore, im pretty happy with it, ,cept for 1 set of bullets on a path deform, but o well, it was a learning experiencec :)
i cant texture so this is as far as it can go for now, i learned alot of little things doing this hopefully my next projecct can be just as detailed if not more, there is alot more deteail i wanted ot show on the renders, but these ones weighed my pc down as it is, i might render one more to show the main body detail,
crits welcome, other then my screwed up ammo coming out heh,
only the second model ive ever posted here in the finished gallery, last one didnt to to well hehe
done in max 5 btw,

Very nice model.
only one thought (besides the ammo :p )
I think the handles on the boxes will never work.
The can't be lifted because both sides collaps inwards
only option would be if they are leather.
overall a great model

Oooh! A minigun!
I love miniguns and it looks like you beat me to the punch. I'm currently modeling a minigun. I posted some renders of the bullets I made for it a few days ago.
While not wholly accurate, you did a real nice job with the details. It's a gun of your own design so there's nothing I can criticize about it (except the ejection of the spent ammo). :D
When the linked ammo enters the minigun (entering into the 'delinker' to be accurate) the links are ejected before the rounds get chambered and ready to fire. Each barrel has it's own firing pin (6 firing pins), which rotates with the barrels. The gun would get pretty clogged up if the ammo remained linked throughout the firing process.
I must say, you did an excellent job with the ammo boxes, they look damn near spot on! I can't really see the bullets too well, but from what I can see of them, they look really good too.
I hope you decide to texture this minigun, I think it would look awsome!
Keep up the good work.

thanks man, i looked frikkin everywhere trying to find info on the guns, so it expells just the shells eh, no links? so this linker / delinker is at the end of the bullet guide (dont know if that name is right, the thing attached from the gun to the bullets) its very hard doing these things with little reference, thanks about the ammo box, i was going to put more detail into it but damn my scene;sallways weighed down soooo much, i do think i will remove that ammo being expelled, cause it does look like total crap, ill just add alot more ammo on the ground heh, ,
btw the ammo box was the only thing i have in real life, so thats why it ended up looking the best
thanks for the reply btw!! lol i usually never get any
and hey manni :)

It's actually called the 'Feeder/Delinker'. It feeds the the main gun housing (with bullets) after it delinks the links from the bullets.
When the bullets are 'delinked' the links get ejected out of the 'feeder/delinker'. The gun fires and then the spent shell casings are ejected out of the main gun housing. So both the links and the spent shell casing are expelled.
There used to be a minigun manual (in PDF format) on the Dillon Aero web site, but it looks like they took it down. :( But here's the link anyways, they still have pictures of the different parts used on the minigun. http://dillonaero.com/
The path the ammo takes is this: 1) Down the ammo feed (or ammo chute), 2) into the feeder/delinker (where the links get removed and ejected), 3) into the main gun housing, 4) Spent shells get ejected.
It seems pretty simple, but the minigun it a little complet. lol Kinda like a nuclear reactor, they seem easy enough to build, but they're very complicated. :p
On your model where the ammo is coming out, you can use that for where the shells get expelled from, just take them off the link.
I hope I helped... even a little bit. :)

nice model,
something I`ve always wondered- is that 3ds default rendering? or do you have to do alot of tweaking to do that- cause I love the way 3ds renders, mayas sorta retarded like that, the models always have weird kinks along thier borders, maybe someone knows how to deal with this>??

if you use max 5, all you do is throw in a sky light then go to advanced lighting and use light tracer, thats all,
in max 4 or lower im not sure how sorry

very nice lil man :p
BUT
whats with the empty shell outlet?
there's a bunch of empty shells on the ground (the way it should be imo, but the cases are arranged way to neat. when flying out the gun, spinning like mad, no way they would land like that :)
second thing, theres this belt of empty cases hanging out the gun. no sticking is a better word.
if you choose for an empty casebelt instead of empty cases on the floor, i do think you should make em hang like a real, flexible belt. or at least round of the curl it makes when coming out of the gun...
other than that...great work, very nice work on the ammo boxes, great detail dude!!!keep it up and ill talk to you in the weekend

i agree with everything caman0 said, only other thing i see that looks weird is the ammo boxes, the belt is comming out of the box , which looks weird because the box is small. maybe im wrong. anyways there isnt anything major wrong with the model just the placement of certain items :) anyways very well modeled and in great detail. cant wait to see this finished and textured. :) nice work.

I really like the style, but I think you should chamfer some of those edges, and then... animate it
Cheers,
