View Full Version : rigging a necklace?
sethmisek 04-15-2003, 08:47 PM I need to rig a necklace for a short.
Id like to keyframe it for the shots where i need to control position and the way its facing.
and i would like to figure a way to do it with dynamics also.
(.note its gonna be outside of a hooded cloak -mayacloth)

You could always build a dynamics system with a solid body object, pin constrained, for each joint in the necklace. Make a set of keyframeable joints as well, and use constraint weighting and an expression or two to place the actual necklace geometry at a position blended between the dynamic system and the keyframed joints.
Set your blend parameter to 0 (say) to get only the dynamic motion, and set to 1 to get only keyframed motion. Animate a ramp in between to get a transition if you ever think you'll need that in a shot.

i notice one cool method that used soft bodies on a curve that was in turn had a spline Ik on it. The cvs of the spline ik had clusters which were then keyframed. The soft bodies allowed the curve to react to forces at the same time.

thanks mark rigid bodies should work fine for some shots.
ill probly just build diff rigs as the shots require.
2byts your suggesting i make a slpine ik into a soft body for secondary motion. that could work.
i was thinking of putting in a couple joints instead of clusters to control the spline ik. well see if i can get good motion that way.
guys think spline ik is the only/best way to animate that many joints. i would need a joint for each link im thinking.
so i couldnt rotate em by hand.
i just though of this now. i could attach the links to a curve and animate that so i dont need all those joints.
ill start trying stuff now. but more suggestions are always good.
