[edit]:
You need 1024x576 PixAspRatio 1:1 or 1,0
-------

we did a 16:9 project with afterfx

we used simply a resolution of 1024x576.
Then we rendered it out with a 16:9 setting, aka "anamorphic" (TMPGenc)
Looks strange when rendering (a circle is displayed as egg),
but the file-header of the movie will tell the player-software, how to interpret the film and everything is fine.

So you should render out in 1024x576. Where you set your anamorphic setting, doesnīt matter, just "somewhere" in the project.
But as said before, you get squetched images, and thatīs not good for compositing

What are you outputting too? The answer depends on your output medium.

Ok, for dvd this helps.

No idea why people are telling you to render at 1024x576, because its a waste of time. DVD can only hold 720x576 rez at the max for PAL. The only thing that is going to change with wide screen is whether or not you add the black bars for the wide screen yourself or you tell the authoring software to have the dvd player play it back anamorphic(plays on the dvd with a specific aspect ratio, but the encoded image takes up the entire 720x576 space). If its anamorphic you just need to setup your camera in maya to take that into account.

good explanation of anamorphic here:

Of course, you donīt need 1024x576.
I know, that only 720x576 (PAL) are diplayed.

But if you have to do a lot of compositing (especially text or image stuff for checking title-safe areas) itīs better to have an un-distorted compositing in AFX.
Itīs not so the technical need, itīs the quality of work which makes it necessary (for me, at least)

For 720x576, youīr going out to Plasma, not PAL-TV. Thatīs a huge difference. Ask your customer, what exact type of Plasma-LCD he is using and check , what resolution it has. We had a Plasma-Screen, which supported 1365x768 pixel (61 inch). Nice to have it at home, hard for making movies on it !!! Evetually, he should change the settings of the screen.

As I said in the post (link) better test everything with a ten second movies which contains an exact circle and Text with animated background...

Hey Admins, where is my post from 2 hours ago
[edit]: DId I click "Preview" instead of "Apply" ?

Stay calm, It seems, the display was made for NTSC - 16:9.
What you have now is 1024x576 Pal 16:9. Just scale the comp down to 852x480. Now you should have the right size. The question is now, if itīs NTSC, does is have to be render with 30fps (rescaling time of mvie) or is it OK with 25 fps?

Another problem could be that 852 is not dividible through 16, so you could get troubles when rendering mpeg2, if you go out on DVD. 848 is dividible.

Tip: If you get in heavy time troubles, make a propose to your customer to play the video from a computer. So you could get a Quicktime-mov (with pro-Player) from your TV-Out a have it fullscreen-movie.
