Title: Hektor
Name: Marek Denko
Country: Slovakia
Software: 3ds max, Photoshop, VRay

Hello folks,

Here is my latest personal work. I called it Hektor which is the nickname of this diesel locomotive in Slovakia and Czech republic.
I worked on it several months in my freetime. Done in 3dsmax and rendered in Vray. I also did some postproduction in Photoshop.
Hope you like it. Thanks for viewing it and have a nice day.

Dedicated to my little son and my wife.

Marek..Stunning is not the word for this..You keep getting better with every work you do..Awesome...5 stars..There's only one thing I feel like saying. The time in this pic seems to be in the evening, and the image is lit by yellow to reddish light, while the blue on the right end of the sky seems a little odd. Well, again, this is just my thought. Maybe you want it that way. It doesn't spoil the mood of the image at all.

What did you use for vegetation, facing alpha maps and particle system for spawning? It holds up well and has nice variation to it, just like overgrown wild plants should. Really dig it, would love to know if it's geo, or alpha mapped, somehow I always end up doing all the vegetation for the place I work at, and it caught my eye in your piece, if you don't mind sharing.

For grass I used several types of grass strands scattered with advanced painter. For bushes I started with onyx tree and then I modified with in a bit noisy stuffs. Plants are hand made from cylinders and scattered nails and spheres and one of them is from xfrog also deformed and modified at the end.

I would have to agree with the praise you've recieved so far (more to come, I'm sure). The pallette realy is perfectly handled. I also wonder about the planting.

The one compositional issue I have is the last light tower on the right--I would have left it out. It is the tallest thing in the picture, and pretty much cuts off the right of your view. Without it, the locomotive gets to create the 'peak' of the perspective lines at the top, and the train is the central character.

Great work, thanks for posting it!

HI Marek;
one more great piece, congrats.
It's fun, just a quick look to the thumbnail and I've said to myself "i know who's behind this one".
The sky, the lighting, the extreme attention to detail and yet the simple composition, the mood. It's all yours.

I have been, and still am a fan of your work. This shot is wonderful; there isn’t anything I don’t like about this photo. The attention to detail and the composition to the picture are outstanding. I still have your old demo reel on my computer for inspiration.

On a side note
your website is excellent, love your photos - it doesn’t say if your a professional photographer, but those photos are awesome. Also if you could, make a DVD on how you compose and create these wonderful shots.

Thanks, and good luck on your next art piece

Composition, attention to detail, texturing, modeling all solid.

Especially like your choice of lighting -- slightly overcast early morning or evening -- with strong reflection highlights on the rail heads.

Curious to know what technique you used for the foliage.

That's quite amazing, great work!

One of the most realistic renders I have seen, period. I say that not just referring to the composition, but with regards to the details. The details on the track and points are spot on, and the loco looks very accurate. Being an undercover railfan, I notice these things! :P

There isn't anything that shouldn't be there, and there is nothing missing that should be there.

It's truly amazing that someone catches those very simple and mundane moments in such insanely beautiful 3d artwork. And you do this in every personal piece. If it was a photo, I'd just look and say 'nice', mostly for photoshop work, but when I know it's 3d, it's whole another dimension of aestetical response, it gives me this thrill going through my body... Unbelievable.

Maybe you'd like to share more data with us, wireframes, polycount, some techniques i.e. for grass, work-hours, etc.

I've just used dynamic default geometry so Vray was able to render this out with 2Gbs of Ram only... without layers.. slower than static but it does render it.

I don't like leaves on the left side :scream: and it could be great if I had sky in higher resolution. It has only 3k but my render 6k so I'll need a lot of repainting on the horizon to print nice poster from it.

This is amazing photograph! True moment captured in time.
It caries eastern european spirit of melancholic nostalgy.
It has that feel of wide skies, open space, sense of freedom, timelesness...
...and years of distances which this train has seen.
Feeling that when you travel fast enough, time stops.

Your work is inspiration!

Thank you!

I really love the color. The smooth fade from orange in the mid left to blue on the right gives it such great feeling. The dark green grass at the bottom gives it a really solid base.

How did you get that color to balance so well? It's like a wheel from orange to blue to green.

Absolutly wonderful!! I love it so much that I have the picture as my wallpaper!! the colors are warm and feel natural. The composition, the textures... wow!!

I notice one thing while I was moving and selecting my Icons on my desktop : all the vertical lines are parallel. I dont know, would it feel more realistic if there would have a tiny rotation on the train, the poles, the big electric lamps, ...?
I'm picky here...this picture is superb! Bravo!!

its inspirational and for me the most important thing is not just textures or painfully detailed modelling or amazing light and color pallette, for me its a compelling and inspirational work that just gives me a very discriptional hint of the moment. you havnt given a caption to this awsome work. but i for me it was "the moment".
as far as technicality is concerned, looking at the grayscale render, for me the most amazing part is the track. i spent few minutes to approximate the amount of time you would have spent on that and a shiver ran through my spine and i just stopped thinking about it and kept enojying the visual itself. was a pleasure for me. thanks for that.

Deep feeling melancholy - or is it just dread - memory clearly. A dreadful beauty it seems. Some grown-up psychology at work inside this compelling image. Thank you.

OnyxTree works great, yes?

i would love to know what if anything on this image you did in post. it has a great subtle feel to the colors which is whats impressive beyond most 3d renders you see, how did you get that :) its not so overdone to be obvious but the way the darks in the image are positioned it really draws your eye a certain way, was that enhanced in post?

It is really amazing piece of work , Marek.

But I was wondering, why you didn't use DM plants instead of making everything in 3d. I guess DM bg would have saved a bit of time.

but great work. I love the atmosphere

This is an excellent photorealism. Another post stated the light of the right side in yellow and red hues was usually to the blue color of the right side , due to the time of day. I think this is in the evening hours, because of the lights of engine seems to be on .I have walked home from school along a railroad such as this and remember the see the blue along with the yellow an redish at dusk. I grew up in a coastal area and it is just the way the sun hits the sky .

Name: Marek Denko
Country: Slovakia

Hello folks,

Here is my latest personal work. I called it Hektor which is the nickname of this diesel locomotive in Slovakia and Czech republic.
I worked on it several months in my freetime. Done in 3dsmax and rendered in Vray. I also did some postproduction in Photoshop.
Hope you like it. Thanks for viewing it and have a nice day.

Dedicated to my little son and my wife.
