View Full Version : How to apply a Layered Texture on a building?

Hi! I am really new to Maya, and creating a reconstruction of an historical building for a project. I am currently using Maya 8.5.

I have been trying to apply a dirt map to my building so that it
doesn't look quite so perfect. I selected the entire front of the
building, took a UV snapshot and took it into photoshop. Just to see
if I could get it working, I made an obvious dirt map with big black
lines. I then saved it as a targa with an alpha channel. I then went
to hypershade and created a layered texture. I dragged the original
projected texture down into the hypershade work area and then created
a new layer and placed the 'dirt map' I had made on that. I changed
the top layer to multiply and it seemed to work. However, the texture
looks all stretched out again when reapplied to the front of the
building. Is there a way I can retain the original repeated texture
size of the brick layer (I think it's at 50 & 2) and have the dirt
layer not repeat? I am assuming that since I took a UV snapshot, that
I should be able to project the dirt layer onto the front of the
building and not have to repeat it....but I can't seem to do this
while maintaining the original repeat ratio of the brick. I have
attached a screenshot of what my hypershade work
area looks like. Thanks! --Jennie

You are using single UV with two different dimension of textures, I guess.

Go back to your mesh and creat another UV snapshot that matches dimension of your dirt map, and link them accordingly from the editor ( Windows > Relationship Editors > UV linking >UV centric).

Try it.

[added] Ah, here I found related tutorial link (http://www.render-lab.com/Maya_UV_sets.htm). Hope this clear up what I was explaining.
